Endgame for a new player

Hey guys!
I have recently started playing retail WoW and I am very close to reaching the lvl cap  (doing it very fast thanks to the +100% exp buff). I have a few questions regarding the endgame :

  • is it worth to return to old expansions to finish questlines/do dungeons/grind reps? I have barely scratched them (I did about 1 zone in every expansion);
  • what does the BfA endgame look like actually? What is the prefered way to progress in the endgame?;
  • does afshion matter in this game? After playing GW2 and FFXIV I just cannot stand my character looking ugly xD.

Thanks for help!

Congrats on your upcoming ding!

Is it worth returning to old expansions?

Probably not in the way you’re thinking. You can return to old expansions:

  • to see the story and characters
  • to pick up transmog
  • to farm gold - up to 40,000-50,000 each week from old raids
  • to farm achievement points

Does fashion matter in this game?

Transmog, transmog, transmog. Transmogrification is the system in which you ā€œlearnā€ the appearances of gear you can wear, and than ask a transmogrifier to change the appearance of your actual gear to match - for a price. It adds up! here is a basic guide to transmog:

and here’s a guide to sets for Druids. You don’t have to stick to the designed sets - most people who are in to transmog pick and mix appearances from all over to create their look.

What does the BfA endgame look like? What is the prefered way to progress in the endgame?

For the highest level gear, you have three paths: Raids, Mythic-Plus dungeons, PvP Arenas. Most people don’t spend much time in any of these, so there are many other things to do as well, but when you talk about progress, that’s where you might be progressing to.

You will have to find the mix of activities you enjoy, and can deal with, for yourself. However, whatever you choose, you will start the same way, and I list the steps below.

Hitting 120 is confusing … very confusing. Of all the expansions, BfA is by far the most confusing to hit max in.

You will want to do at least some basic PvE to get going. Or buy a boost to get gear.

Here are some objectives at 120:

  1. World Quests

Open World Quests and get the Flight Master’s Whistle. The quest is Uniting Kul Tiras, which you will find on the Ship. You need to get all three zones to Friendly rep. You also need to do the demonstration of Island Expeditions,a nd finish getting your three Footholds on the enemy territory, if you haven’t already.

World Quests will get you gear and resources and Artefact Power. The gear is calibrated to your current ilevel. It gives you gear at or above your current level, up to 415-420. Each day there will be an Emissary to do 4 quests for a faction for a bigger reward, gear up to 445.

  1. Flying (Pathfinder)

The devs spawned this twisted, misbegotten mutant of a system a couple of expansions ago when they were caught short on their promises. You have to do a completely irrelevant laundry list of absurd things to earn flying, but if you want to fly, it’s the only way. Here’s a guide:

  1. (Patch 8.2) Nazjatar

There will be a quest for you to go with the fleet and end up in Nazjatar. You have to do this to unlock Essences, which are modules that slot into your Heart of Azeroth. You do want them. Naz had decent enough gear last patch, but AFAIK even beginning World Quests will probably gear you faster now.

Stay there at least until you get your first Essences.

  1. (Patch 8.3) Visions

You will be summoned to Stormwind, where Wrathion will meet you and take you on a series of quests that lead to your Legendary Cloak. This will open Visions and Assaults.

OK, when you’re done with all that, you are up to date with the expansion, (YAY!) and even without any dungeons or LFR, your ilevel will probably be around 440-450, enough that you will not drop dead of fright when an enemy player looks at you in a BG.

  1. Mythic-Plus

Now you want to do some M+ dungeons for more gear.

.

You will no doubt have more, specific, questions. Ask again when you have those!

That is great, thank you for the answer! I am 109 lvl currently on DH and Monk, progressing smoothly so far  Will follow your guide on the endgame. Also, what would you say about mounts? Is there any good way to get some cool ones?

It depends what mounts you think are cool.

You will want at least one flying mount and one ground mount, unless you have a flying mount you can be comfortable with on the ground - walking on a Drake makes me crazy. You can create a macro to summon the flying one if in a flyable area, else ground.

A very easy drake to start with is one you get in the Obsidian Sanctum in Dragonblight, Northrend. Just walk straight in and one-shot the boss without killing anything else. Set your Raid Difficulty to 25-player before you walk in. Both 10- and 25-man difficulties drop drakes, but the Twilight Drake from 25-man is cooler, so do that first. At 120, or even 109, it’s trivial.

For ground mounts, I personally favour tigers and horses, and there are many available. You may prefer others. Browse around those two links above and see what catches your eye.
