Entering the Darkmoon Faire Arena without going through the door?

Some noobish question:

Today I was alone in the arena… or so I thought. Nobody has been outside and I entered the arena, trying to get the chest for myself, as suddenly a rogue was standing next to me, obviously disabling me.

As far as I understand you need to get through the door when the timer starts but it seems like that you can enter it before as well when the chests pops up. How does one do that?

But this can’t be. You get thrown out when the chests pops up. How can he still be inside then?
