Exception: ACCESS_VIOLATION - The instruction at referenced memory could not be read

Hello, long story short. I am a returning player, upgraded to Dragonflight. Gear upgraded my characters but every time I click my Death Knight the game crashes. Get the ACCESS_VIOLATION message. No issues, was rolling a new character anyway, sure there was nothing important on the character.

Went to play today after the patch, now all my characters are crashing the game. Same error.

Uninstalled, reinstalled drivers. Got rid of AMD adreanaline. Run in compatibility mode, and as admin. Nothing. Game crashes.

I am now unable to play my main which is really annoying.

Any help?

Hey there Iesteth!

An ACCESS_VIOLATION error can have a number of different causes, drivers being only one of them.

Can you please go through all the steps of this guide making sure you follow each in full?

Crossing fingers this should be enough to get you back in-game

Done all of them except reinstall WoW. Doing that now.

Update: Reinstall worked. Had to delete all registry keys etc but a clean install seems to have fixed the issue. Now to wait for 101gb to download on 60mb connection. :sob:

That is interesting, I have downloaded the game just this morning and getting the same crash error every time I click on one certain quest item. I will try to reinstall but it is surprising since I never had WoW installed on this particular PC until this morning.

Alright, Iā€™ve tried everything apart from re-installing Windows to no avail. I have basically the same issue as Iesteth with one of my DKs when scrolling through the list of characters (I have two, one is affected and one is not) and also as I mentioned above - one of the quest items in Hellfire Peninsula also crashes the game with the same C0000005 exception.

Tried so far:

  1. Closing all application apart from Battle.net app and trying the same course of actions - no luck
  2. Running memory check - no issues, no luck
  3. Re-installing the game (and as I mention before - WoW had never been installed on this PC ever before today) - no luck
  4. Adjusted the fan-curves to make sure it is not an overheat (even though I highly doubt that would be an issue with just a few assets in just one game)

Pastebin of the error log: https://pastebin.com/c0jqEpam

I also have a video recording just in case and the memory dumps ready.

Got same issue, except WoW was installed and more that successfully worked on this PC , reinstall didnā€™t helped. Only one way to login spam enter and hope that log in on character, if not - better luck next time :frowning:

Tried to load non main account, but trial one - and everything work fine, creating hero, log in and out, but not on the main account

Seems like a uncaught Null Pointer Exception.
No one can fix that except Blizzardā€™s Devs.

Here Blizzard rep says the fix is on the way: Crash on hovering over backpack items after 11.0.0 - Support / Technical Support - World of Warcraft Forums (blizzard.com)

It is not exactly whatā€™s happening in my case but is very similar since I am pretty sure it is a WoW problem with some certain assets.

Same problem only when i play Death Knight game crashes. Not on alts only DK.

Iā€™ve collected all threads regarding this issue and created a bug report here:

Any news about this issue?
Iā€™ve reinstalled wow and battle net, updated my drivers and still I get the same error when I try to access my DH and now my monk as well.
It crashes when I try to access Dimensius the All-Devouring quest for my loremaster achievement

Just to add to the chorus. This bug is everywhere in Northrend. I canā€™t complete quests, canā€™t talk to NPCs, canā€™t select quest rewards. Itā€™s not for all quests or all NPCs, it seems almost random. Borean Tundra was almost fine (only one crash) but Howling Fjord is not playable.

I continue to submit bug reports, plus this crash automatically trigger bug reports.

Iā€™ve also have problems with this bug when opening vendors and hovering my mouse over their goods. Also in Orgrimmar now. It appears that not every asset loading into the memory and upon requrest the game crashing.

Iā€™m had to use the revo uninstaller to remove every trace of WoW and Battle.net from my PC. Remove the registry and temp files. Empty the recycle bin. Reboot.

Reinstalled Battle.net then WoW. As soon as the executable was available to play launched it and havenā€™t had an issue since.

Reinstalled addons 1 by 1 just to make sure.

Dunno if the above will help anyone but it fixed the issue for me.

The only way to get rid of it after months of looking for a solution was to deactivate the Intel Boost features in my Bios, but ever since I only had one crash in a week while I had 30 a day before thatā€¦ soā€¦ maybe it help some ppl here

also crashes for me with the following quests:

  • Arā€™kelos the Guardian (quest id 10176)
  • Dimensius the All-Devouring (quest id 10439)
  • Succulent Orca Stew (quest id 11564)

ofc i cant complete the loremaster achievement nowā€¦

the crash its not caused by us in any way and doing the basic troubleshooting is a waste of time and would only keep computer it3rate people busy

can reproduce it on both windows and mac so its not us.

some report ids from crashes:

Had the identical issue with handing in Dimensius the All-Devouring. You canā€™t even drop the quest as it causes the crash like clockwork every time.

Netherstorm is riddled with quests that trip this crash.

Itā€™s very easily replicable and doesnā€™t respond to any of the proposed ā€˜fixesā€™; it is very much ā€˜not usā€™.
