Blizzard has always tried to release their expansions and patches around other popular games.
Yesterday a gameplay video for the GOTY was released, Hogwarts Express. After only an hour it had 500k views. It is extremely hyped and all feedback is positive. This game is definitely going to snatch (or shall I say snitch) up Game of the Year.
Hogwarts Express comes out on Christmas.
Since we can expect the WoW expansion in Q4, is it possible Blizzard will be releasing their expansion also on Christmas to compete with Hogwarts Express?
Harry Potter or Warcraft, which franchise will come out on top?
If both really come out at the same time, which game will you be playing first?

I doubt it.
Wow has an established pattern where people level then gear for end game content and progress. I don’t see them releasing over Christmas / new year when people have a packed RL calendar. It would be counter productive.

They said multiple times, they do not want to release new content during the holiday period such as christmas or other major holidays, as it’s toxic behaviour since majority of the addicts will rather spend time playing wow rather than spend time with friends and family (myself included to a certain extend haha 
).
If they do, they are just major hypocrites.
This isn’t even a contest. Warcraft can’t compete with Harry Potter. Harry Potter is the greater and more popular and well-known franchise by several lightyears.

Harry Potter is the largest franchise in the world. Elden Ring is merely a niche game which has garnered fame in the gaming community and only attracts people that enjoy souls games where you spend most of your time dying. There are people who will buy a console just to play the Harry Potter game. It is on a completely different level and they are definitely going to hand it the GOTY award. While Elden Ring peaked at 952,523 concurrent players Hogwarts Legacy is going to have millions of players on the first day playing at the same time.
Fun Fact: Harry Potter’s face is more recognizable worldwide than even the Queen of England.

Well, he’s right about one thing. Harry Potter definitely is one of the largest franchises in history.

If the general gameplay is even close to what has been presented, then it will be very popular.
And even if the gameplay isn’t very good, then it’ll still be popular (especially in China), because the franchise is a powerhouse and there’s a dedicated fanbase that is ravenous for more.
Will the game compete with WoW? Yeah, there’s definitely some overlap in customers.
Will Blizzard try to release the next expansion around Christmas? Yeah, probably, but they would have wanted to do that even without the existence of Harry Potter. It’s the best season for game releases.
Is it a WoW killer? WoW is death by a thousand cuts, because WoW remains WoW and thus slowly bleeds players to newer and more innovative games.
The whole Harry Potter franchise is weird though. From an outside perspective it screams to the heaven that JK Rowling should just write more books! The franchises stagnates because it’s a standstill in terms of story so every Harry Potter product is forced to either regurgitate the same old material or do some made-up pre-book fiction stuff.
That lady just needs to write some more books without getting her head stuck up her progressive butt.
But it’s of course her prerogative not to. But blimey if I understand it.

GOTY is a weird thing. Does it relate to quality or popularity or a mix? And who decides?
Regardless, Elden Ring has sold ~12 million copies, which is a lot for that type of game. And it deserves all the praise it gets in the gaming community.
But no one outside of the general gaming market knows what Elden Ring is or what a Souls game is. It’s a very niche thing.
Harry Potter on the other hand is a household name. If the marketing is there, then the popularity is guaranteed on a scale that makes Elden Ring look like an ant next to an elephant.
Then it’s a question of whether the quality is also there, but if the gameplay trailer is anything to go by, then it certainly looks promising.

Idk but if I have to make the choice for whatever reason I’ll play Hogwarts Legacy. That thing looks beyond incredible.
Although we may all discover that it’s a buggy mess and no fun at all. We’ll see.

Trailers are nothing anymore to go by.
Warner brothers also has a track history of horrible monetization.
