External ssd

Given that shadowlands now requires an ssd, is it possible to run a external ssd with wow game files on it via usb2 or 3. My pc was new for legion, so dont want to spend another chunk of cash on a new one, if I had known about the new requirements I doubt I would have preordered SL.
Any help would be appreciated…

yeah its fine, i have an external ssd with wow on it. wouldn’t recommend usb 2 necessarily, but even that will probably work. 3 or later should be fine.

Fab thankyou for the info…

Why not internal?
You should have more than enough SATA connectors on the mainboard.

Well for me, I use a laptop… wouldn’t have a clue how to replace the internal storage, or if it’s even possible. Sometimes external SSD is just the better and easiest option.

it also has the handy bonus of being convenient to use on multiple computers.

it’s probably possible, by the way, and not particularly difficult either (other than finding out where all the screws are to take off the back). but some laptops can’t be upgraded, so i can’t say for sure.

Installing an ssd internally is very easy.
Plug in the cables, put the ssd anywhere in the case if you don’t have a designated slot, boot windows and go to the disk manager and format the new drive (ntfs). Done.
Using an external SSD may be simpler, but you will lose speed and increase access time. Which is the whole point of an ssd… to have a super fast drive.

It would have to be USB 3.0 or better, actual good SSD and an adapter case for it. Flash drives and some “external hard drives” could perform much worse, especially with random access as they are designed just to store and retrieve data.

Its just the easiest option. I’m not very technically minded with pc’s and whee I live theirs only 1 shop who do upgrades. Rang them a few days ago and he said he was installing a ssd for someone and was having problems, so not risking going there.
And thanks for the replies peeps…

Sure is. But all you have to do is watch a video on how to install one, if you are unsure.

Don’t need to get an internal drive with an enclosure. I’m using a Samsung T5 personally.

Yes, some external are actual drives. Cheaper options may not.

You can just put the SSD anywhere in the case, since it has no mechanical parts, it does not matter how you “mount” it.

USB3.0 runs at a theoretical max of 4.8 Gbps, but that’s under controlled lab conditions so expect it to go down. Especially if you’re running other USB devices on the same USB3.0 hub.

SATA-III runs at 6.0 Gbps, again theoretica under lab control test but it will be much faster than USB3.0 for loading, saving.

USB3.0 works with external HDD’s as they only manage 200-400Mbs.

2.5 inch SSDs would overcome 3.0 usb as they run at 550Mbs

USB3.0 is unsuitable for NVME drives, it’s far too slow so you should connect those to USB3.1 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt 4.0 to gain the speed that the drive offers.

Most stores like PC World or other offer a upgrade service where someone would install the internal SSD for you. So it’s good to ask how much that would cost. And would forego any overheads USB has as you need to share that bandwidth with other devices, depending on the host controller.
