Oh I know how to remove it. I did the quest with 2 chars (rejecting the N’Zoth gift) and chose not to do it with 2 others to see what happens (accepting the gift). So two chars have the eye on their heads. The plot gives us a choice as to either remove the curse or not. My query was for those of us who kept the curse, as to whether we are meant to leave the quest hanging in the quest log or abandon it.
If you want it removed.
Remove: Get a toy with the appearance.
Keep: See other players who are wearing it.
Abandon quest: Hear incoherent whispers.
