Factions vs Story

There are multiple portions of the game where faction-driven conflict feels extremely forced, but it’s important to distinguish things.

WHEN
In WoD your character becomes more openly “special”.
There’s more dialog than ever, and as the game decides to give you a spotlight in the narrative, you are now “hero”, “champion” or “commander” left and right.

WHY
Annoyances aside, although it makes perfect sense for the various factions to be at war with one another, your character - not that different from Khadgar or Thrall at this point - should be free from faction-driven conflicts.
You should be able to coordinate with players from any race towards what is obviously a common enemy.

WHAT
That does not mean you would be able to walk around in Stormwind as an Orc, or complete Horde quests as a Gnome.

What it DOES mean is that you should get to decide who you treat as ally or foe, regardless of faction.

This holds true for every single expansion starting (at least) with WoD.

In Legion you had the Class Orders. Yet still you are pitted against the other faction, even those of your class - those you are supposedly working with - in the open field where common enemies are everywhere and a common purpose is clear.

In Battle for Azeroth you have some issues early on but quickly it becomes clear that there is - again - a much bigger agenda and pressing matters at hand that require cooperation.

But the biggest offender is without a doubt Shadowlands.
Even on a story level there’s absolutely NOTHING going on between the factions.
Everyone has seen past the fog of war of BFA.
It is completely ridiculous to have faction-driven open world PvP in Shadowlands.

CONCLUSION
Starting AT LEAST from WoD, every form of faction-driven open world PvP has been completely forced against the very plot that permeates the entire expansion from the start.

Again, I’m not saying the conflict shouldn’t exist.
I’m saying YOU - the player character, who is important in the narrative - are not a mindless faction drone.
You have a higher purpose AND are recognized as such by opposing faction leaders.

As such, Party, Raid and Guild should NOT be faction-specific.
Likewise, whether you are hostile or friendly towards another player should NOT be faction-driven at least in WoD, Legion, BFA or Shadowlands.

In SL, WPvP is explained through the interests of the brokers (especially the ones which are also the PvP merchants) in “conflicts” between the maw walkers. We kill each other for their amusement. But I agree, from a lore perspective, WPvP is reall dumb nowadays…

Aren’t the Brokers are interested mostly in Battlegrounds and Arenas?

Open world PvP under the nose of common enemies is what’s silly.

It’s pretty simple. At the core the horde doesnt like the alliance and the alliance doesnt like the horde. Its ineffective to be at war all the time but there will always br smaller conflicts between the factions because people hold grudges? Everyone forget wolf daddy coming at sylvanas like a mad dog in legion? Quite literally the biggest threat to azeroth but priorities vary from character to character, same as it does for players:)
