Can someone explain to me why this family of pet have SO MANY requirements to unlock ? is it some kind of extremely overpowered or game changing pet ? i really have to go through an 8 year old expansion and waste days or weeks of my life on dead content just to tame a feathermane pet ?
it just seems odd that i can level a fresh character from 1-80 in less than half the time it takes to learn how to tame feathermanes …
went into this thinking “how hard can it be to unlock the ability to tame a pet” ill just go do it real quick and now im 10 hours in and im not even halfway through with all the ridiculous requirements
Feathermanes are available to all Hunter specs. Note that the Tome of the Hybrid Beast is Bind to Account, which means you will be able to purchase additional tomes and send them to other Hunters on your account without needing to complete the other requirements on them.
All of these were things that you would naturally do during Legion. Really, it’s still pretty much a matter of just getting your Legion class mount, which is pretty basic.
I see you’re pretty new to the game. If you stay, you will be logging thousands of hours - tens of thousands of hours - playing, thousands of those chasing down non-essential acquisitions. Lots of hunters spend a couple of hundred hours chasing down rare pets, I spent over 300 hours farming Clutch of Ji-Kun, a mount I don’t even use. (OK, I do regret that one.)
The game is in the buisiness of giving you lots and lots and lots of hours of Things To Do. And it succeeds admirably in that.
10 hours? Those are rookie numbers! Seriously, if you want to play here, get used to it; it’s part of the satisfaction of reaching a goal that it wasn’t just handed to you.
I totally see where you’re coming from but this isnt some kind of crazy achievement or something that will drastically change the game and as you said yourself :
so actually it was in fact something that was handed out as long as you happened to be playing during legion which is the problem. i wouldn’t mind as much if i had to go around the new expansion doing stuff but forcing me to go back to legion and literally waste my time not making any other progress seems like a lot to ask for something that was pretty much handed out to anyone who happened to be playing at the time.
it just seems very very outdated. i feel like im playing a single player game running around legion its completely dead content with no other player in sight.
"10 hours? Those are rookie numbers! "
10 hours is a lot of time and im not even halfway through the requirements yet. Wow has always been known as a casual game and it just seems like alot to ask for something so insignificant as a pet its literally just something for rp purposes since the pet as far as i know at least wont be game changing in any way.
if i wanted to grind hundreds of hours for things i would just play runescape, black desert or any of the other mindless grind games. it just doesnt fit in with how casual friendly the rest of the game is.
Wait until you have to grind the tome of bone-binding because its a % chance drop from most Maldraxxi mobs.
Also the ottusk manual and the lesser dragonkin ones.
Luckily those 3 you only have to do once.
You still have to buy the one to tame mechanical pets for every hunter and though you only have to do the grind for the hybrid beast book once, you still got to buy it and send it to every other hunter after you’re current one.
Why they have not made these all account wide now is beyond me.
But, to take a similar case, if you started in Legion, you might have wanted to get, say, Invincible. So go back three expansions and dedicate 45 minutes a week to it, at a 1% probability per week. You’d probably burn 50-60 hours on that - same as you would today. So this is nothing new.
Side-note: Pets are not exactly insignificant for hunters in general. This patch, you will need at least a Spirit Beast for BM, a Ferocity healing reduction pet for dungeons, and a Clefthoof for solo play. After that, you will probably want 5 or 6 more with specific functions for niche uses. However, you are right that there is nothing special about Feathermanes. You want one because you want one, and that’s the key point here. You don’t NEED it. You just WANT it. If you actually NEEDED it, the devs would have provided a catch-up shortcut for you to get one quickly.
WoW is a descendant of Runescape, and still shares a lot of its underlying philosophy. And yes, WoW is a lot friendlier to casual play than Runescape ever was.
And if all you want is to level and get more powerful and get lots of gear, than the game happily obliges by putting you on an express conveyor belt with no stopovers, and lots of catch-up for people who join late.
But when you want to chase things for their cosmetic or prestige value, you will find that the true currency is time spent.
I’m not knocking either you or the devs here when I say: that’s the way it is.
i dont really agree with justifying one bad mechanic with another bad mechanic.
i play mm hunter only and i dont do any pve after reaching max level i just do battlegrounds non stop so i dont think it applies to me
also
i think you might not realize how tedious something like this is to do when you are not someone who is familiar with the game and have a lot of game knowledge.
The issue with doing it besides the time it takes. is that nothing is explained to you anywhere… i had to do like 2 hours of googling just to figure out why i couldnt use chromie or if i even had to use her.
Then i had to figure out how i even got to legion since i had never been there before and then i had to google each quest independently just to figure out where to start them and then every couple quests there will be some kind of bug that wont allow me to continue before relogging or abandoning the quest and redoing it all.
its also not just one continuous questline like for example the tww campaign where one quest automatically leads to another when you finish the first one which means that every couple of quests i will just be standing there like an idiot after turning in a quest and be forced to alt tab to google and read where on earth i start the next quest because sometimes its not even in the same area. not to mention all the time gated quests where you have to let your mercenaries do it for you in the hall
if it was just one long CONTINOUS questline it wouldn’t be so bad but having to alt tab after every other quest just to figure out where to go next is extremely tedious and feels very outdated.
I feel like im putting together a big puzzle of quests but 90% of the pieces(quests) are not even needed and there is no way i can hide them so i have to keep alt tabbing and googling stuff just to know which quests i even need. then there is also the annoying fact than when you are doing boring stuff like this you automatically turn of your brain and go on autopilot so every so often i will catch myself turning in a quest and picking up the only other quest that npc had assuming that since i just turned a quest here that the next should be here as well. then 20 minutes in i will realize that i just spent all this time doing a completely irrelevant quest.
I have maybe played 200-300 hours of wow and i have never before felt like i just wanted to uninstall the game it just completely ruins my immersion and flow when i have to spend more time googling than actually playing the game.
im actually going to cancel my sub and let them know that the feather mane taming requirement is the only reason i did so. i know it might seem petty but that’s seriously how stressful this has been. im no stranger to grinding but this is something else when you need several tabs open and having to alt tab every couple minutes to google where to go next.
sorry for the wall of text im just pissed of at the game.
Even I, with more than a decade of experience and a double doctorate in Internet and Wowhead Search, can get exasperated sometimes trying to find all the bits of ends of threads I have to follow to do something.
By all means, do. I play the game, doing what I am expected to do (sorta) and then when I want to do something else, I dive down one of these rabbit-holes. So while they sometimes tire me or try my patience, I don’t stick at that very long in one session. So with all the back and forth, I get a break from any one rabbit-warren.
BE SURE to include the bit about having to have multiple tabs open to search. The Feathermane/Legion grind is far too specific to have any influence on them, but as an example of a well-known gripe, it will add a gram of weight there.
I’m sorry the game didn’t work out for you, but it’s better to find out and be aware now that to struggle on for three years.
rabbit hole is actually the perfect word to describe this
I do like the game especially because it is so casual (usually). when i was younger i used to play more grindy games but since we have less time to play as we get older i have started gravitating to more casual games like wow.
i started in bfa i think it was and have been buying all expansions since then just to gear up and mess around in battlegrounds. I really liked the fact that you can actually get stuff done in wow without spending hundreds of hours so i really got caught of guard with this one but im 15 hours deep now so i cant quit before finishing it and getting my Cloudrook pet xD
Well, if you’re gonna do that, then there’s no need to actually leave, Just take a breath when you’re done, and go back to messing about in BGs, and avoid following Alice next time!
just found a thread where someone mentioned “btwquest” addon and damn ! its SO MUCH easier to keep track of where you currently are in the chain and where you need to go next. i cant believe i tried doing it without it would have saved me so much frustration if i had this from the start… im such a noob xD
Hey, googling for 2 hours myself your post is the first clue to start my journey for the Feathermane pets… Would you be so kind and tell me how and where your started the Questline? I can’t use Chromie either to get into the Legion questline…
I thought about making a new Hunter Character just for this questline, but i think that would be ridiculous…
I hope you got your first feathermane by now and didn’t quit WoW forever
