So we all know that Fel can be used to make fire. It’s like- the default thing it does.
However, there are mobs in Azsuna (Empyrean Astrologer, Empyrean Conjurer) and Oculus (Felfrozen Imp) that use a “Felfrost Bolt” spell. There’s also the Invasion Point in Legion that sends us to a horrible icy hellscape.
So I ask the forum; is there lore on this? Can fel magic make ice? Or is Blizzard playing silly beggars with its spells on NPCs again like those demons that use holy magic in Black Temple?
Let’s hope it’s not possible, otherwise if frost mages discover this, they will soon ask Blizzard for green ice spells customization…
but honestly in the lore, I guess it could be possible. Lore-wise a lot of Warlocks were once former Mages and Shamans, so realistically quite a lot of them would recall how to cast frost magic and ice spells even as Warlocks, and they could be able to cast new spells making frost and fel magic work together. Also because the magical schools of fire, frost and others are considered just variations of the arcane main branch, so they could work alongside fel magic too.
But honestly when I read “Felfrost Bolt”, I don’t think it means that fel magic can create ice in particular, it’s just that the fire part of the spell (“frostfire bolt”) has been enhanced into the more powerful and corruptive fel magic, so basically it just means that the fire magic has become green fel fire, not that fel fire magic itself is producing ice on its own in my opinion.
Fel crystals have been a thing, for absolute ages so it’s not terribly outlandish, even if unusual. Heck before Shadowlands jumped the shark that’s basically how KJ created Icecrown and the Lich King.
The demons of Black Temple were technically disconnected from Fel instead feeding on Arcane. That’s why they were blue most of the time.
