Hi fellow druid,
I’m a fairly new player and never touched Legion. All guides from YouTube and Wowhead that tells you how to unlock / apply different cat / bear skins assume that we all did Legion and therefor we did all basics quest to unlock some basic cat from.
That’s a very concerning issue for me, I’ve been farming the Legion content all around without even knowing what to farm precisely to unlock a cat form.
Any shadowlands/new player guide around that you know ?
Just do you class hall campaign in legion. that’s it. mage tower appearances are gone.
classhall campaign, unlock feralweapons then you can see at the tree in dreamgrove how to unlock the 4 rows of forms 
Other content you can do is farm Fandral Staghelm in Firelands. He drops a weapon which gives you the firecat appearance. You gotta be sure to have loot specialization set on feral as the weapon can’t drop for the other roles.
Should be easy enough to do, as normal and hc difficulty don’t share lockout
nop! i farmed for this weapon on 3 druids and then i switched to my monk, it finally dropped for me and i was able to unlock the appearance! if you go in there with a class that can equip staffs it’ll automatically save the fire cat apperance to the barber w/out having to be a druid or be on the feral spec ^^
I found the Wowhead Artifact Appearances calculator very useful
If you hover over the buttons to the left, it will tell you what you need to do the unlock a specific form. Note that, as stated above, Ghost of the Pridemother forms are no longer available.

Classic Appearance → First row in calculator (Fangs of Ashmane)
Upgraded → Second row in calculator (Nature’s Fury)
Valorous → Third row in calculator (Primal Stalker)
War-torn PvP → Fourth row in calculator (Incarnation of Nightmare)
Challenge → Fifth row in calculator (Ghost of the Pridemother, no longer obtainable)
Hidden Appearances → Sixth row in calculator (Moonspirit)
Firelands staff is really easy to get for the fire form.
