Stormwind City sure is a large structure. What type of stone do you think it’s made from? And where do you think they’d gather that amount of resources?
I’ve done some research and the Royal Stonecutters Union did a lot of ‘improvements’ in Cataclysm. That said, I still wonder what kind of stone it is and how good the defences really are. Any castle/fort nerds around?
These are odd questions that come to haunt me in the wee hours of the morning…
You see, it is a little known secret, but actually only very few of the stones used to build Stormwind were actual stones.
Most of them were just painted wood, dried up and sold to the nobles as special, lightweight stones. That’s how Zul managed to set it on fire so easily. The paint easily catches fire and the wood keep it going.
The game world is a lot smaller than the actual world of warcraft so i assume there is many more mines and quarrys in the world than we can see. So elewyn probably has a quarry.
As for if the defences are “good” historically i’d say there very pretty but the walls are built in a really weird and easy to bypass way. as for there physical construction. It’s probably a skin of marble for show, then if they follow the standard buildign practicies of medievil castles then there will be a core of mixed rock and gravel. with a skin of stone brick walls.
But that’s just guess work based on my knowledge of castles.
As for other cities and their resources, Gilneas City comes to mind. Emberstone Mine could provide stone and metals for the surrounding region. I imagine it supplied the Greymane Wall.
The Blackwald provides lumber for the nation. Prior to the Catalysm I believe Gilneas used to field a Naval force but due to deep coral reefs beneath the waves it made navigation difficult. Duskhaven seemed to support a Dock though.
