Fifty Character Limit

It may seem like a lot, but you know what’s the difference between having fifty characters to have hundreds of mounts, pets or thousands of transmog items? Indeed are characters not rather more central to RPGs?

The game has been out for fourteen years, and given such a long time, why is it so crazy that people have amassed a large roster of characters?

Considering how many races have been added since vanilla, and considering some of them offer new forms with Druids, and unique totems with Shamans, it’s hardly a surprise that people might want to create fresh characters rather than being forced to delete old ones in order to make room.

There were 16 character models at launch. We are now in a situation where there will soon be 42 (and more Allied Races can be expected). That’s something of an increase, and again we now have many more Druid and Shaman options. I repeat, how can anyone credibly argue “Why do you need all of them” in a game where no one dismisses collecting pets, mounts, toys and transmog items. Characters go rather beyond simple collecting.

In an RPG - AN RPG - why do people dismiss the want to have unique characters? For some that is going to be many after all this time. Levelling is a core part of this game, and people who enjoy levelling are amazingly going to have rather many characters at this point.

The insane thing to me is how eventually we’re going to be able to have half our total characters on just one server (merged and of course it’s many more).

Now let’s move on to the ‘value’ argument that will inevitably come up. For starters, who are YOU to determine “Huh you can’t play 50 at once, that means they mean nothing or little.” well you can’t play two characters at once, so delete the one you aren’t CURRENTLY playing, yes?
Just because a character isn’t played once even a week, it doesn’t magically remove its value. Why not delete half of those mounts you’ve collected? After all, how long is it going to take for you to use them all in a week or even month?

The point is I made all of those characters, I levelled them to max, and that gives them value. Secondly, I most certainly do play them over the course of time; a month, a year, who cares? The point is they exist, I put time in, and I will put time in.
To expand on this, are you going to tell Tony, who only plays his single character an hour a week, to delete it? After all, by some standards that character has no value because it isn’t being played the arbitrary ‘enough’.

I can understand having a cap, but the game has come a long way, and the total characters per server has been increased dramatically. It really is time to increase the total limit to 60 or 70.

Finally, not many people are going to take advantage of this-- so to suggest the servers are suddenly going to melt is utterly insane.

Simply, there is no good argument against this change. The only responses against I have seen are mindless incredulity or spite. “I can’t understand how you can have that many; so you shouldn’t have more.”

When you say more allied races to be expected do you mean after zandalari and kul tirans?

If so, what evidence is there of more? I only ask out of interest as I’ve heard/seen nothing about further allied races to come after those two myself so would be interested to see any news I’ve missed or if it is just speculation at this point.

Also I did wonder why it was only 50 when you can have 18 per realm now.

50 chars… O.O Imagine doing Rep Emissary with each one of them… or Assaults… or Island expeditions… or Weekly quest… Brrrrr i’m shivering… That’s a nightmare… i can’t even do one with 5… I think 50 Char is excessive… based on 12 classes… unless you’re aiming for 12 classes for 10 races…

I think they might mean the little fox and snake people ? theres rumours about them but tbh i think we have enough races now i just want another

ranged
mail wearing
tinker class !!

Please for the love of, research punctuation.

Strangely enough though you’re the only one not derailing the thread. Again though YOU think fifty is excessive. Isn’t 350 mounts excessive?

I think we may get more races one day but not allied ones. I believe allied races are bfa based and the 8 will be enough for the bfa story. Others may know different though so I ask

Offtopic i hope you are better now and ready for busy day for you and lil ones .
Take care and i think btw you are a real nice and fun person and you have a firey edge i like

ahahah  i like three dots, they are like me … broken.
Writing all in one sentence is boring for the eyes, at least with three dots you can have a pause, a break where you can think of what I’m saying, pondering about my contest, slowly paced, so you can start creating an adequate response to my message, which it could be right, but also wrong. but… other than that… i like three dots :stuck_out_tongue:

mmm, YES! I don’t know what mount to use and it makes me sad, as I like my hackstrider but I have a moonsaber from the warfront, and the waterstrider. i’m not a big fan of huge mounts, but I do realise there are far too many. i prefer having more Xmog than mounts. Really, the Uldir mog is horrible, as well as the late ones. maybe season 2 BFA might bring JOY to us.

Yes, much better now thank you

OP, I’m not derailing your thread, you made a point to mention further allied races and I asked for some clarification on that point before agreeing that 50 character slots seems low considering they have increased the amount per realm. What more can I add? Would you like me to start a petition for you to get them to increase the total allowance? Shall I make some signs and go protest outside blizzard HQ for you?

Must be frustrating sitting at the limit and you want to do more things. I think the problem is there are only a small number of players in your position :frowning:

It seems to me there are far fewer world-first raiders. Yet the community and the developers bend over backwards for them.

There is a problem, and that’s perception. The ‘cool kids’ get a free pass for being ‘ultra extreme’ because they’re in the limelight. Having 50 characters is hardly extreme even given the time people put into collecting things in this game.

Again, I put it to you-- how is it not surprising that people who like levelling and making characters (yes, people enjoy making characters in RPGs) have rather a lot after a decade and a half?

If someone wants to say “Well, if you like levelling so much then just delete the others.” as if somehow it’s about the journey and the destination doesn’t matter at all. It’s as if having medals on one’s mantelpiece is worthless-- yet even that analogy isn’t sufficient because characters will be able to level again come next expansion, and there’s nothing stopping them from being played at any time.

It makes perfect sense to increase the limit because there are hugely more character options since vanilla. Yes, one might argue it was very generous at the time, but that was FOURTEEN years ago.

I like all of my characters, because I - call me sad as an RPG player maybe - actually like to think about the theme of each. Characters most certainly aren’t some one-dimensional farming bot for me, and I suspect for a great many as well.

I would even be happy to pay for 10 extra slots.

Another thing people might say is “Have two accounts.” Well actually, I have (one is inactive), but really paying twice as much - £20 a month - is actually quite steep for some.

I would also like more character slots. I’m sitting at roughly 40 characters at this moment and every time a new allied race is released, I want to make more.

I know there was threads on the old forums about this issue with quite a few people who wanted more slots per account.

I’m not aware of any language that uses … after every half-sentence.

I explained about how it’s easy to play fifty characters over a month. I may play four characters religiously in one week, and then another four the next. The point is they are played, and that’s important.

Many people don’t play the game at all in one week, a month. They might only care to play an hour a week, but that’s their choice.

I just don’t see a valid argument over “Well you can’t play them all at once or daily so”

Yea, I am exercising my right to speak as I wish. I’m being terse, I’m not being offensive.

During the Love is in the Air event I went through 50 characters daily doing that event for the chance of the rocket. Took hours

They restricted it more the year after and since then it’s had to be a character of a certain level so a slightly smaller farm effort for me since then.

It doesn’t damage my case to admit I use them similarly.

However, I do like them all and I fully intend to level them up to 120 in BfA-- not motived to do so as farmbots either. That is simply a nice extra.

I very much adore my specifically male Worgen Survival Hunter, with his girl-crow pet. This character has a unique feel in lieu of his race, spec, class, transmog, mount and general aesthetic. This is true for all of my characters.

For him I am waiting for the long-overdue model update, which means I won’t play him for a year or so seriously. Does it matter that it will be a year? I like him, and I intend to play him.

Perhaps my male Gnome Arcane Mage, who for some reason is adored by every female WoW player who learns of his existence. Maybe it’s the general Gnome cuteness added to by his donning of the Time Lord tier armour? Maybe it’s his Arcane Familiar companion. Not the best talent? Dunno, I just pick what meets my idea of the character’s theme.

I admit it’s difficult to put character into Void Elves. However I do have a female Void Elf Frost Mage, who I like to imagine is the sister of my female Blood Elf Fire Mage. The latter isn’t very pleased about the situation.

I mean if characters don’t matter in an RPG, what does?

This is actually as far as I go as far as role-playing is concerned, but I am invested in them to some degree-- that means I don’t really like having to delete some, or not being able to make new ones of new races or classes.

only reason I have 50 is because I love coming up with new names for chars.
5 chars I have to server transfer for a pal who does super rares for pets etc so im not allowed to delete those.
I couldn’t care less about different races, unless they give me an option for a cool name like my light drenai called “iseenosun” who dresses all in white and has the red goggles … for that albino look.
id love more slots for chars but I doubt id level em.
My target, since vanilla, was to have a full roster of max level chars (without using bots/multiple accounts/paid levelling etc of course) so more slots probably will deny me that target.

I think the 50 limit is hardcoded into the game and it’s not a matter of moving a slider to increase it.

Some people like characters at different levels so all 50 may not all be maximum level. Though I did have 25+ at 110, multiple classes on multiple servers.

You do know you can’t let anyone except your child play on your account?

@Daecimus: This is not a new topic… and since I currently have 66 characters (16 are Starter only) one I am familiar with. Unfortunately, there is very little chance of an increase to the account wide cap, because that request has been denied multiple times in the past. People with 50+ characters in active use are really rare… Possibly rare enough that I might be one of less than 20 active as of today in the entire EU region.

In terms of time, I have occasionally played 50+ characters during a single day, but a far more typical figure is between 18 and 40.

I strongly suspect it’s rather more than 20. More like thousands I’d imagine given how many people play this game, and given the type of game it is.

It’s not as if providing things and content for even a vanishingly small minority is a unprecedented. Just what percentage of the playerbase will get 100 Exalted reputations for instance? Just what percentage of the playerbase defeats the final Mythic boss of a given raid while it is current?

This is going to become more and more of an issue as the game expands. It’s already getting very close to not being able to actually have one of each character model (It’ll be 42 soon and it was strongly suggested there will be more Allied Races to come. Maybe just two more but that’s 46 and the game isn’t going to end after BfA).

Come to think of it technically Demon Hunters are unique models. So there you go, that’s another four. If we get two more races by the end of BfA we will be standing at 50 character models.

I know it’s not a new topic, but it’s a relevant one I think. Again, it’s not as if frequently denied requests have always remained so.
