Fire PvP without Greater Pyro?

Title basically. Has anyone actually tried running a spec that doesn’t use Greater Pyro? The way I see it, it goes against what fire has always been about (fast paced action). Percentage damage is also arguably one of the dumbest things to have ever disgraced a class. If I want big bolts of fire that deals lots of damage, I’d be playing a destruction warlock.

So if you’ve tried a GPless spec, ,please let me know what your experience was like.

It’s like asking a destruction warlock if they’ve ran a spec that didn’t use chaos bolt. They are signature moves.
But I agree with you, I hate relying on greater pyro, and being a large chunk of the targets health, it’s hard not to use it.
Personally, if they changed it into a strong DoT that scales from your actual power and can cast while moving, I would probably play fire a lot more.

Very early on, and it was horrible. We were straight back into being a one-hit wonder after 7.1 IIRC. At the altest, 7.2.

Greater Pyro was never a signature move. Pyroblast is and was. I think your suggestion is decent, but hardcasting for +3 seconds doesn’t belong outside of classic wow.

I was actually haveing a discussion with the Lock yesterday on the forums becasue he wasn’t playing with Roots on Conflagration… He said it was because he was trying a more sustained spec that didn’t reliable on big Infernal Chaos Bolts… He said it was going alright against some comps but really it wasn’t good enough to lose the big bolts

Find me a fire mage in pvp that doesn’t Poly followed by greater pyro and I’ll buy you an ice cream. I forgot fire mages actually have other spells.
But yeah, personally I hate cast times. It’s 2019, so I want to see more fast paced action combat. Not this stand in one spot for 3 seconds just to get interrupted at the last moment. It’s such an awkward play style.

Seems that we have a different definition of what makes a move a signature one.
Just because Greater Pyroblast has become the only thing fire mages do well now, does not make it a signature move in my book. Maybe it’s because my reference goes beyond BfA or even Legion ? I don’t know. Either way, we both seem to dislike it.

Props to that lock for going against the grain. I absolutely despise this sort of approach to pvp, but at least destruction’s got more going for it than fire mage atm.

I know it doesn’t really count but was dueling in Durator and saw a Fire Mage wrecking absolutely everyone and he wasn’t speced for GPB… I know Dueling doesn’t really count but was nice to see a Fire using a different approach and making it work.

That’s pretty awesome. Mage has always been a class that really shines in the hands of good players. So much more than a lot of other classes anyway.

Urgh after saying this… Was on my Feral and got beaten by a Fire mage because I literally just didn’t have enough kicks / CCs -.- Just GPB after GPB with Fire Blast and Hot Streak Pyros when off cd!

Also, I agree, Greater pyro in my opinion makes pyro feel insignificant.

Thats sometimes run against interrupt teams, yes. When CB is just so obvious cast it will get you interrupted

Thats pretty lucky, with me they always apam Scorch and then Greater pyros.(I mean that genuenly, I do not mean any offense towards mages, just what I see a lot)

You can scorch with frenetic speed while strathing in circles with FBs and PFs and chuck instant pyros while making them dizzy, thats fun. Chuck in frost novas, dragon’s breath and blinks and you’ll annoy the crap out of them :grin:

I used to play fire mage in vanilla and pyroblast was the most damaging spell with a 6 sec casting time
When that spell becomes instant due to hot streak it will lose its strength for sure otherwise it would be way too op!!
So there was a need for a damaging spell that will do massive damage with a casting time. And this is how GPB was born!

Is there no playable firestarter (the honor talent that lowers your combustion cooldown with each thrown fireball) and flames of alacrity build that depends on spamming fireballs and having frequent combustion windows?

Hard to get off too many fireballs though to make it work. Vision of perfection is a better alternative now also. Greater pyro is good to have in the arsenal whichever way you play even if your not playing around it. If a 4 second window appears there’s nothing better in the game never mind the spec.
