Fix for Ray tracing?

Is there any news on a fix for the ray tracing incompatibility crash for the AMD Radeon RX9070XT?
Just upgraded to a new pc so I can finally play wow on decent settings, only to discover my new card doesn’t even have support for wow.
I have tried everything and nothing solves the problem.

I’m still experiencing this issue on an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB.

System:

  • AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB
  • Windows 11
  • DirectX 12
  • AMD Adrenalin 26.8.1 WHQL

With Ray Traced Shadows disabled, WoW Retail is stable. As soon as I enable ray tracing, the game becomes unstable and eventually crashes / triggers a graphics driver failure.

What makes this particularly frustrating for me is that I recently bought a new PC with current-generation hardware, partly so I could enjoy modern graphical features like ray tracing properly.

PC hardware is expensive, especially now, and after investing in a new system it is very disappointing to find that a supported graphics feature in a game like World of Warcraft is effectively unusable because it causes crashes.

I completely understand that bugs happen. What is much harder to understand is that this issue appears to have been known since the end of May and is still affecting Radeon users several months later.

This is not simply a matter of losing some FPS or needing to lower a setting. The feature cannot realistically be used at all because enabling it makes the game unstable.

Could Blizzard please confirm whether this regression is being tracked internally and whether a fix is being worked on?

I think Radeon users who have been affected by this for months would really appreciate some acknowledgement or update on the status of the issue.

Likely to get fixed sometime in the future based on their blizzcon graphics showcase. Then you’ll have to wait another six months for them to import the improved and working feature from Forever edition of the game over to Retail.

No fixes yet and around same time they broke it NVIDIA had hotfixes for Directx12

Starting to look like that Microsoft just may have pushed something that broke RT shadows in wow but no proof yet, everything points towards it being due game update on 28 may so far.

RT shadows may be buggy currently on NVIDIA hardware to with missing shadows, alto maybe that got fixed in NVIDIA’s case.

I haven’t tested yet on my 7900 XTX if it still crashes but i am pretty sure it does.

Would not expect a fix unless actual blue confirms this is known issue and being looked into.

What i do know is that some AMD Vanguard i spoke to mentioned they attempting to reach out to Blizzard but haven’t had a response back yet, its been about 4 months or more now since the issue started happening.

So they haven’t responded all this time so far even to AMD, i am not sure what ways AMD could use to contact Blizzard about this issue.

I guess Radeon market share is to small for Blizzard to notice in the haystack of bug reports that they get daily.

Yes please i have the same issue, earlier it worked like a charm.

Im on 7900xtx with 24gb vram GPU, and i crash now each time i try to setup raytraced shadows.

Blizzard please help us.

Blizzard doesn’t seem to care at all about this problem, not even enough for a confirmation of it being a problem. How the mighty have fallen…

It’s not much of a problem in classic or retail, but I wonder how it will affect forever. We might hear it once the beta has started whether or not the beautiful graphics can even be played on an amd card. Much of the lighting/shadows seem to require ray tracing, but I hope I am either wrong or Blizzard has fixed it in that version of the game.

Happening to me as well on a 9070 XT, Windows 11

Really hoping Forever will run nicely

It happens on every single RDNA2/3/4 gpu its 100% reproduce able, and it was 100% working before may 28.
Anyway Radeon is only small market share, you can have people spam the bug reports, but they get so many bug reports daily that they will just miss it for next couple of months until 1 of the game devs decides to try a Radeon GPU and discovers that its broken, which is probably never.

So apparently the issue is unaddressed in Forever edition, but then again according to comments the game performance is overall very horrible with new graphical features enabled so there is much work to be done this close to full public release.

Im sure Blizzard will work over this issue.

For now it looks like this:

On very strong pc with 96gb fast ram, 7950x3d Ryzen, few fast nvme ssds, and 7900xtx with 244gb vram - i can’t set ray traced shadows on (earlier it was working without problems) in retail due to when i choose them on on any setting my game crash.

In Forver i can’t setup ray traced shadows at all - option is lock to disabled and in the dropdown description it says that it is becouse gpu specific has no support for dx12 etc. which is not true at all .

Im playing a lot of games with very high ray tracing , not only shadows and they are wokring good.

Please, please, please Blizzard , World of Warcraft is my beloved game and i so much want to experience it fully. Please fix this.

Same same, nothing really to add here to what the others have already mentioned. Tried RT the other day by turning it on when i was already loaded into the world and it seemed to work at first but on instance change into a raid the game crashed. No issues when RT is off.

Just a quick update from my side: the issue is still present.

On my RX 9060 XT 16 GB, WoW remains completely stable with Ray Traced Shadows disabled, but enabling them still causes the game / AMD graphics driver to crash.

This issue has been reported since the May 28 update, so we’re now approaching four months with Ray Tracing effectively unusable on affected AMD GPUs.

It would be really appreciated if Blizzard could at least confirm whether this is still being investigated. Even a brief acknowledgement or status update would be helpful.

Yes, i love World of Warcraft and i love Blizzard, but please dear Developers try to fix ray tracing for AMD.

Try? they broke it they can fix it, they broke it around 28 may with a small patch they released.
And if they cannot fix it they can try respond to AMD that been trying to get in touch since may 28 about this issue.

AMD does have debugging tools available to figure out what is going on, but this requires cooperation with developers.

Absolutely ridiculous, that they break the games imersion for a portion of the playerbase, but have absolutely no interest in fixing the issue until it becomes a large complains from people.

Any news about our problem from Blizzard?

As of today, issue remains the same for me.

Just happen to test cos i heard rumors of RT being disabled but its not since it still does cause GPU driver timeout when enabled.

This was tested on 7900 XTX

After looking in to the ray tracing problem, there was a post where somebody supposedly talked to a memeber of Blizzard staff about the it. I’m guessing a GM
Apprently Blizzard does not have enough reports about it to consider it a major issue at present, so they are urging people to report via the games report a bug serice to get the numbers up to a level that will “attract” their attantion.
Wether this is true or not, I cannot confirm, but it does seem like a sensible approach.
So get reporting I guess :-/

:pushpin: That’s a good point. Let’s try it. I’ll also submit a report every day through the in-game bug report tool about the unavailable ray tracing and AMD instability in the Forever beta. I encourage everyone experiencing these issues to do the same. Hopefully, this will help Blizzard see how many players are affected.
