Flying between continents

We have dragon riding, visually speaking the space between the islands on the map is smaller than the islands themselves.

Let us fly between them it’s 2024 surely its technically possible!

We can’t even fly in Quel’Thalas/Azuremyst Isles…
Technically the continents are separated in the game (which is why you have invisible walls if you swim far enough/… so unless they change that, it wouldn’t be possible.

Would be neat though, even though I doubt I would personally do that often (teleportation is more convenient)

It’s not technically possible because, for example, Ghostlands and Eastern Plaguelands are not part of the same in-game world, even if the map shows them next to each other. So the developers added a portal which (a) unloads the Eastern Kingdom world from memory (b) loads the Northern Eastern Kingdom world into memory.

The reason it “worked” in Shadowlands is because all 6 areas are in the same world. Bastion and Revendreth are in the same instance so to say.

I imagine it would be more taxing to have everything in one instance.

Probably possible but it would be very taxing on the servers. Also expensive and time consuming to upgrade the tech and redo the entire world (of Warcraft)for pretty much no gain…

Be a lot cooler if they did though

Unless they used the tech like they had with Zara Cavs where you got a loading screen sometimes if needed but other times it was seemless.

However I frequently got thrown through the floor and disconnected with that system so maybe not.

A huge world revamp would be amazing but I’m not sure we’ll see it. Would be huge time/cost investment. Would rather get player housing. In an ideal world we’d get all the things.

Didnt they say that the flight animation shown between Oribos and whatever zone you were going to was just a replacement for the loading screen? They’re not in the same instance iirc.

The maps were created by primative cartographers. We don’t know how accurate they actually are.
Those oceans could be much wider than show but they ran out of paper when drawing them so missed out lots of water.
They could be 3000 miles wide so you’d be flying for 20 minutes over open ocean even on a dragon mount.

This

And this.

Just becaus eit´s shown on teh same map doesn´t mean, for lack of a better analogy, that they are on teh same physical plane of existence… For ex you CAN travel from Outland to the Belf + Draenei starting zones, and I think even QT, using glitches /exploits. But you can not travel from that “layer” to anything that existed before BC or after it.

It wasn´t until Wrath that engineering had finally improved the tech /the server performance was available to allow them to actually place more things in the original world, like Northrend.

So, barring a complete world revamp that consolidates all “azeroth” maps onto the same actual “Plane of existence”, the likes of which would make the cata revamp seem like a fun thing to do over a weekend, this simply can not happen.

BTW: what happens if you “accidentally” fly over the Maelstrom during your 20 minute dragonride to Kalimdor? At least in thory, nothing that your character would particularly enjoy participating in

I don’t know what they’ve said but other than Zereth Mortis, the entire open world of SL is in one instance. You’re just moving at 4000% speed when moving between zones.

It would be cool, and it could be done, although it would require a lot of work.
Blizzard has been working on systems that eliminate loading screens, such as flying through the tunnel to get to Zaralek caverns, and the instant transition into Delves in TWW. They could use these systems to allow players to fly between continents without having all continents in the same instance.

The question is do we really want it. It worked in SL because there you reach warp speed on magical death mounts. Do we want to slog on slow vehicles or whatever between continents? Do we want unexplained hypersonic mounts from out of nowhere? Do we want continents so close to each other it makes no sense?

I don’t see how you do it without breaking the theme of the game. Whether it’s portals or a loading screen on a boat that can be considered a time skip, it’s probably the best way to implement travel between continents.

That´s another thing… While leveling on release day I got a dungeon invite the exact second I went thought the first “hyperspeed gate” on my way to revendreth. And when I came out of the dungeon, i was treated to a IIRC 20, 25 minute ride to pridefall hamlet… That´s longer than you need with a traditional mount to fly from one end of any continent in the game to the other, incl the Dragon Isles…

continental flight bringing wow closer to modern ages :airplane:

for the record I prefer the portals and boats and zeppelins, theyre part of wow :dracthyr_hehe:

Hah, this happened to me too, but I don’t remember where I was heading to.

I remember reading something like that but I don’t think it was a dev or blue post; more like a rumor that spread quickly. I can’t find it either with google. But all 5 zones (Oribox, Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, Revendreth as well as the entrance to Tazavesh) are the same in-game map. You can travel from one to another without a loading screen. Someone had managed to fly from south Bastion to west Ardenweald I think.

I am nearly 100% able to cause the game to soft-crash if I enter through the northwest or south-east entrance when dragonriding to the max speed and taking the shortest path around the corners. Sometimes I get a huge stutter and sometimes I get the error that some map that starts with 24xx cannot be loaded.
Once I managed to hit a stone wall before the entrance to Zaralek because the game didn’t finish loading.

The flights were super long if you were going from one zone to another in Shadowlands so I really don’t fancy overland/sea flying between different land masses.

I’m fine with getting on some more instant transport or just a portal.

Only once? Happens to me most times I go to zaralek
