Former Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime Starts a New Game Studios and Publishing

Path of exile, and it’s not even remotely close

No, it’s not. Diablo III is a way more polished game.
If you went and bought Diablo III today, then you’d get a complete game experience with a high production value throughout. And it’s just that - a game. Like old Blizzard.

PoE is modern in the sense that it is a continuous business and less of a full and complete game.

But PoE is excellent, I’ll give you that.

Yes, it’s so polished that some builds can kill the server:

Agree to disagree I guess.

Dota and league are also miles ahead of hots.

DOTA2 and LoL for MOBAs. HotS isn’t even near those two games.

+1 to HoMM III. I loved that game so much. I’ve always been a sucker for turn based strategy but the genre just doesn’t seem to be as vogue anymore sadly.

Regarding the OT I shall keep my eye on it…I think the topic of blizzard’s “sheen” is a bit vague. Their commerical success is not up for debate, but what do people mean by “polish” or “sheen” when they’re saying it lacks that? Is this something we can measure or is it just a sentiment?

A lot of people said classic had “polish” or “sheen” retail lacked, then we discovered that what they meant by that was actually “nostalgia” and that is not something you can put into a game, because it’s based upon an inherent sense of newness and recapturing that feeling. I think what a lot of people are calling polish is that experience of a blizzard game for the first time.

This said, i’m not going to say I think the games are of the exact same standard as they have been, stuff changes, but measuring that on an objective level is tough outside of commerical success, and WoW still maintains a front running in that sense. Something is “different” between now and then, but I can’t say for sure that’s the result of a lack of quality/polish or whether it’s a change in myself and gaming in general and I think anyone else claiming similar would be hard pressed to demonstrate otherwise.

Definitely. I’m probably a little blinded by my undying love for Diablo as well. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

But more polished? I wouldn’t say so. They’re more popular and successful, but I don’t think that indicates higher quality of design.
I find all 3 to be similar in quality.

Ah, I see yer a man of culture.

I doubt anything is ever gonna beat those classics. I’m still playing them to this day, that shows just how well they’ve aged. Truly a masterpiece!

That’s why Blizzard or prominent developers need to revive them.
I mean, CCGs before and after Hearthstone is night and day.
Battle Royale games before and after PUBG.
One good game in a genre and the industry develops collective tunnel vision on the genre.

That’s a tricky comparison in my opinion because HoTS shirks a lot of the MOBA staples and has different systems, like talents, shared exp and objectives on a map. No items, no currency, no last hitting etc.

I’m not going to say it’s not a MOBA, but I don’t think it was trying to be the same kind of game precisely. I think that was a bit intentional because Blizzard knew they entered the market too late and so they had no chance if they tried to emulate the same systems - but generally speaking MOBA players like those systems due to the environment so it explains the lack of success comparatively.

This said there are those who very much enjoy the style of HOTS, I count myself amongst them. I prefer the focus on what i’m doing regarding my team and less focus on my “shop build” or “meta play” like last hitting or “carrying”. I’m not sure who blizzard were targetting the game at honestly.

I don’t know, I’d say LoL and DOTA2 are far more polished than HotS. HotS feels rather inferior in both design and quality in my humble opinion.

This could be very interesting as long as they stay independant. In this age, publishers are more of a hindrance than an actual benefit.

I loved that game! We have this soon:

The issue with Diablo is it’s just too simplistic for me. I did plat it on ps4.

I am having great fun with 2 new games, smaller developers happy to support them…

There’s another game called nebuchadnezzar to keep an eye on as well. :face_with_monocle:

So yeah. But I really do want some of the juggernauts in the industry to get involved in these genres, so it’s not all small-sized indie games.
Blizzard does big better than most. And I like big. Small is good sometimes, but big like WoW is something you can devote yourself to for years. That’s often hard with indie games. The gameplay scope is rarely there.

That one is a new version I think

Nah, WoW has gone semi-free to play. Once first month sub has been paid and you can farm enough gold to buy tokens from auction house then a player has a free to play MMO.

So even WoW has become that but done it differently to other MMO’s out there so it has lost it’s card for being only paid for MMO left.

It lost that as soon as WoW tokens came into play.

Ah I see! I look forward to having it in my collection then. I’m a sucker for sierra city building games. They were my childhood.
