FPS crashes

Starting today, I’ve been getting wild FPS crashes that result in the client not responding. An immediate relog brings me back in at my capped 144fps but within 3 seconds, we’re back to 0 FPS and crashing again.

For me this is only happening in Sanctum of Domination and Sepulcher. Open world stuff and BGs have been completely fine and I hold my capped 144fps with no issues at all.

GPU drivers are up to date, I feel this was introduced with whatever the hotfix was on Friday.

Anybody else getting this?

Same, just started to experience that after that update

Same, in Castle Nathria and certain spots in Torghast wings.

There’s some kind of race condition on one of the process threads. GPU is actually idle while the game is unresponsive.

I came to the same conclusion. Also important to note that this is a problem with the base game and not an external addon. Seems to be combat related for me. I can walk around those raids fine but combat will trigger the bug and result in chain crashes until the encounter is over.

Just happened to me first pull into raid finder. Fun.

Yeah combat always is involved in the complete stops. Have noticed some weird extreme slowdown in some other places but not the full effect.

Just had it three more times in SoD before giving up. Tried different graphics options each time with no effect. Noted that two CPU threads from wow.exe are pushing two cores to 100% use when it happens.

Same here started today, random battlegrounds just complete crash back to client, updated graphics card gtx 960. Seems to be large combat spells.

This is still happening today. Now in BGs albeit much rarer than in raids. Bumping until there’s a fix/blue response.

Cant play with it today, stuck in Sanctum even out of combat cant get back in without lag if ANYTHING is engaged.

In the settings my locked fps kept setting itself to 0!

I unchecked the fps checkboxes and now it’s fine.

That’s not possible, the minimum for locked fps is 8 for exactly the reason I’m describing. Hitting 0 fps will cause a crash. It’s a symptom of the problem, not the cause.

Background fps… for me as I play 2 is was crashing me. Anyways I unchecked both boxes and it works fine now.

I was having another issue with my ui reverting… it hates it if I scale the ui size… turning that off helped too. A lot of bugs atm.

up to 7 crashes in 1 LFR run, wish they would acknowledge the issue.

They’ve acknowledged an issue with Intel CPUs on Mac however I’m using an Intel CPU on Windows, I assume the issue is very similar. What CPU do you have just out of curiosity?

I’d also give up on that LFR run, it’ll loop crashes until you’re kicked.

Same here. Havent tried raiding but its almost impossible to play Epic BGs. Wintergrasp and Alterac Valley DCs makes the whole game freeze up and when I restart it, same thing happens a few minutes later. Annnoying.

Intel on windows

More observations.

  • Sylvanas fight causes it. About 1 minute in. Might be a player spell though, can’t rule it out.
  • It’s not a sound problem, which I had considered.
  • During the freeze - which you can recover from sometimes (like when the fight is over quickly enough) - 1 or 2 CPU cores are max-ed out and memory use of the wow.exe process continually climbs, from c. 2GB to c.4GB by the time the fight ends. Sometimes when you get a screen update (a single frame) that use resets down to c.2GB.
  • Only once did I get an actual crash, with ERROR #138 (0x8510008a) Fatal Exception. It was a memory ACCESS_VIOLATION with the (probably) incorrect information that an instruction at 0x0 tried to reference memory at 0x0.

Same problem with Amd Ryzen 9. In every epic BG the game random freezes. Everything is up to date but no solution.

you have any addon installed?

here never happened and i play many hours bgs.

0 addons.

Facing the same problem as well. I wasn’t able to reproduce it reliably, but it will always happen after a certain period of gameplay. Addons didn’t matter, happens with them and on a clean install as well.

Usually, it start with assets not loading in - I stop seeing certain spells and effects, this then gets progressively worse in the next 1 - 5 minutes and then the game usually completely freezes / crashes and I have to relog.

I switched to DirectX11 (normal, haven’t tested legacy) and it seemed to help a lot. Might be a workaround.
