FPS Drops Particle Effects

Has the issues with effects like fog and gas seriously not been looked into at all? These Legion/BFA issues exist in WoW Classic now too. Green gas outside Gnomeregan makes people lag regardless of PC.

I read up on this and the issues people have reported since 2016 were consistent with my own experience on the BFA beta where fog caused massive lag.

Bump, there is nothing in WoW that can cause my FPS to drop below 60 except any fog ,mist, gas visuals, when i look at it i can lose around 20fps, option to turn it off/on would be appreciated.

they did a major overhaul to the particle effects in WOD and legion. it made the game unplayable for a lot of people.

at first these new effects were so poorly optimized that the requirement to run the game went up 10 fold in certain area’s

a good example was that pig boss in Razorfen Kraul who would do a stampede of smaller pigs that would fill up the ground with dense dust effects. it would cause my GPU fans to run at 100% power.

or the boss in Utgarde Pinnacle who’s dragon fills the walkway with blue smoke.

they seems to have toned down these effects somewhat by now. but they are still poorly optimized…

i would not be surprised if people struggle to keep good fps in classic 40 man raids if they use this new particle system.

Please forward this report to the devs. Could we get a setting (even a CVar would do) to limit the non-essential particles below the current minimum? I understand that this may be difficult to do if all particles are treated the same by the engine, but this is a really annoying issue because it contributes to extremely big FPS swings even on a very high end systems.

As far as I can tell this is caused by excessive overdraw with blending. The issue can be reproduced very easily - just go to Valley of Strength in Orgrimmar, stand above the forge building, and position the camera so that fire and smoke coming from the roof fills the entire screen. With ultra particles and 4K resolution this will bring every GPU to its knees (e.g. I’m seeing 130 FPS go down to 40 FPS).

If possible, please consider a dynamic particle density adjustment, possibly based on particle geometry scale in comparison to the viewport and keep track of FPS to dial back the effect if a dip is being observed. I get it that the engine is perhaps two decades old, but it would be really awesome if someone could look into this. Thank you!

You do realise that… the OP posted that almost half a year ago, and is unlikely to be reading your reply?

Flagged for a moderator, so the necro can be closed properly.

It’s still very much recent, I’m losing my mind in AV near flags and other smoke effects. Please, what the hecking heck is going on, could somebody shed some light to possible solutions?!

I have the same problems and it’s very annoying. I even bought a new computer thinking it was a problem with my old computer.

And what are the specs of the old and the new one?

Everyone seems to have this issue.
Is this yet another skam that is considered normal ?

It might have something to do with DX11 and it not being set to Legacy.

If I use DX11 (and not DX11 Legacy) I have to drop a lot lower on the graphics settings.

Its still a big issue in Shadowlands. I have a Radeon VEGA 56 card, and I can set everything to max settings except particle density, that has to go as low as good, or else my fps plummits to 40 when being in some areas in Ardenweald. Ardenweald has a lot of particle density going on.

Having similar issue even in Classic…

What GPU do you have?

If anyone is looking for a way to solve this just put your particle density on low.
This solved it for me.

Hi there,

While the advice and/or information given in an older thread could have been accurate at the time, it may be now be outdated or a reply to an old thread could be overlooked. For these reasons please avoid ‘necro’ posting. If you have a similar issue and the advice previously given hasn’t helped then please create a new thread with all relevant information.
