FPS drops!

Hi,

Anyone else seen this?
When logging on, FPS is smooth, (I’m 100+).
After a few minutes of play, FPS drops to ~20.

Running a brand new PC, GTX 1650.
Weird thing is: I have an almost identical computer setup, but with a GTX 1050 which does NOT suffer FPS drops. Same addons, OS, etc.

So it seems to me that some graphics cards are prone to drops, others not. Regardsless of their GPU power.

edit: I’ll be posting tests and results here.

  • Logging off the toon and on again restores FPS to normal (80-100).
  • Reloading UI does not help, FPS remains ~20.
  • Graphics settings (eg 6-10 ) in-game make no difference.
  • Switching between DirectX 11 and 12 makes no difference
  • Setting the GPU to default in advanced settings, as well as NVidia manager, makes no difference.
  • Going AFK a few minutes, restores FPS to normal.

Have you checked the temperatures of the CPU and GPU?
You can use a tool like HWInfo, let it run in the background, play a while until the FPS drops happen and look up the temps.

Echoing Kiyuki here - this does sound a lot like a component may be overheating, which in turn would cause the hardware to throttle its performance until it has cooled down a bit. Going AFK would sort of accidentally solve that, since there is obviously a lot less system load involved if you’re not actually doing anything in the game.

Thanks Veadsarias and Kiyuki for your input!

It seems I have a problem with one of the two fans on my GPU. One doesn’t appear to be spinning at all. (GTX 1650 Max-Q).
Sigh. Brand new computer. I’ll have to look into this now I guess.

Might get back with further info. Thank you for your help, much appreciated.

If it’s Max-Q then the GPU setup can have a very custom fan curve optimized for noise. Launch a stress test app like Furmark and check if the fan will spin (but stop the app if it will report very high GPU temps and no fan spin). Also on laptop start it should spin for a moment and maybe in BIOS setting you could change it.
