FPS Issue - Advice sought

Tech help/advice needed

Hey folks

I wonder if someone would be able to provide some info or advice r.e WoW and my latest computer.

Due to a space saving requirement and a reshuffle of my game room, I’ve changed from my old PC to a gaming Laptop, namely a LENOVO - LOQ 15APHS 15.6° Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen™ 3, RTX 4060

It comes with 8gb DDR5 also.

I also use a Samsung Odyssey G7 32” curved monitor as my main display.

WoW is my main game, but I play a raft of others. For context, I’ve been playing Cyberpunk on high settings, 100+ FPS and it looks phenomenal and runs immaculately.

I also play CoD, DayZ, ARMA, Fallout, etc, they all run flawlessly.

Now to my point, WoW in most areas looks tremendous. But I’m having some FPS issues in Valdrakken and certain Raids/BG’s, namely Ashran. I’ve spent a lot of time reading Reddit/Forums and seeing a few complaints about Valdrakken in particular. Is this just something I’ll have to learn to live with? On fairly high settings, outside of Valdrakken, I’m getting 100-144 fps, whereas today in the city, it was quite stuttery and sometimes dipping to 40 FPS or so.

I wondered if adding another 8gb of RAM would help, I believe there’s a slot free in the laptop to allow for this. Would it be worth spending the £140 to add this to the Laptop? Would this help the FPS at all?

I’ve played a fair bit with the graphics settings but most of the time the results are the same.

Perhaps I’m looking too much into it and I don’t even spend that much time in Valdrakken, but wondered if I’m doing all I can to maximise performance. I’ve also never had a decent monitor before and it’s got a heap of settings also like Freesync which I don’t know whether or not it conflicts with the NVIDIA settings/WoW settings.

I know that Valdrakken is causing issues going by the searches on here but wondering if the RAM upgrade would help or if I’d be throwing money away.

Any advice or info is greatly appreciated.

The CPU is the #1 bottleneck in WoW, especially noticeable in areas with many players (Valdrakken, raids, world bosses/events, 40man bgs etc.).
So there is nothing you can really do to improve performance.

What you can try is, reduce addons to a minimum.
Nameplates and some weakauras are hard on the CPU.

The only graphics settings that really have an impact on the CPU are viewing distance and environmental detail (also raytracing shadows are killer).

I would recommend 16GB for daily use in every PC config these days and it might give you a small increase in FPS since you will be using “dual channel” with 2 sticks.

140 pounds for 8GB seems expensive though.

Hello mate.

Thanks for the reply. It seems I was speaking nonsense and although the laptop receipt shows 8gb, there is actually 16gb and 2 of 2 slots are being used.

I had a look at my processes etc and the Windows Defender was using an obscene amount of memory. I followed a guide to stop it from constantly scanning its own folder and set up scheduled scans and the difference is huge.

I’m in Valdrakken now and getting 80 FPS! I can’t believe it was an issue like that which was causing the issue. I’ve also removed addons and just left DBM and Recount for now.

Thanks for the advice mate!

Switch to Details! instead, the best and also least ressource hungry dmg meter.
Recount etc. is outdated.

Oh? I didn’t realise that! Will make the change now, thank you again!
