Hello, anyone else getting stutters/framerate issues in Stormwind and Valdrakken on Argent Dawn Allianc EU server? It seems to be server related because I went to a low pop server and it was fine, and I also went to “Twisting Nether”, which is marked as “Full” just like Argent Dawn.
This started to happen now on friday night, it was fine before (played earlier today).
Is the server just overloaded since it’s friday evening/night? Or do I have to transfer my characters to another server to get rid of this? Maybe it has something to do with Argent Dawn being an “RP server” and maybe it has different rules when it comes to sharding or something. I think I’ve heard that there’s no sharding in capital cities for RP servers?
I mean, I accidentally a bunch of server transfers that I couldn’t refund, so maybe this is a blessing in disguise?
What do you all think of this? Or maybe I’m overreacting and freaking out in advance?
Speaking of blessing in disguises, I have been thinking about faction changing to Horde because I have been Alliance since vanilla hmmm
The server itself has nothing to do with your FPS, at least not directly.
The amount of players is what’s impacting your FPS.
More players = lower FPS.
Turning down graphics does not help in this case since it is a CPU-bottleneck issue with the engine (being mostly singlethreaded).
In Valdrakken specificly the only gfx options that will help in a CPU-Limit are “view distance” and “environmental detail”. Those will affect the CPU.
Also RT shadows is heavy on the CPU if you have them enabled (which you should probably not)
Everything else will just impact the GPU which is already underutilized in a CPU-Limit.
Reducing addon bloat and optimizing your Weakauras will also help a bit.
The addons with the biggest impact on FPS (especially with many players) are Nameplates, anything debuff/buff related, some Weakauras, basically stuff that is dependant on the combatlog.
What are your system specs btw?
I assume you most likely have an older/weaker CPU or your addons are causing too much load, or both.
Thanks for reply, the lag spikes last forever (and there’s like framedrop stutters for several seconds when entering a new part of stormwind)
I gambled and used my 3 server transfers that i had laying around and faction changed changed aswell to horde (Twisting Nether) and there are no more lag spike stutters even at peak hours when there’s extremely many people in Orgrimmar and Valdrakken, and im liking it so far (i never participated in roleplaying anyway so I’m not losing that part)
I dont have Ray-Trace shadows and I have played around with settings (when i disable particle density, FPS goes up a lot, but I play with it on High because I want the rain to appear (i think there is an addon that enables rain even when Particle Density is lower, like Leatrix Plus)
I did have Task Manager open when it happened and it appears there is a single core that reaches the ceiling in the graphs, or very nearly reaches the roof. So maybe it actually is a CPU bottleneck hmm
my system specs are:
Ryzen 7 5800X (not 3D thingy, and apparently the 3D version is EXTRMELY good for World of Warcraft from what I have heard)
Nvidia RTX 3060
16GB 3000Mhz ram
system drive: NVMe Samsung 960 EVO (I have other games on this one and WoW doesn’t fits)
game drive: SATA Samsung 860 (shouldn’t be reduced performance by SATA speeds right? It had TLC (triple level cell and not QLC or PLC garbage) memory and DRAM cache
Addons:
Deadly Boss Mods
Details Damage Meter
RareScanner
Yes WoW benefits from the larger cache.
I have the 5800X3D and it runs very well for the most part even though it still drops below 60 sometimes in 30man raids and events like Superbloom.
Even the fastest CPUs (7800X3D and 14900K) will bottleneck in this game.
There is nothing we can do about it and Blizz just keeps on adding stuff on top of this ancient engine.
They aren’t even fixing features that have been broken for months, even half a year, like the Renderscale for example.
It’ll kill your FPS if you go above or even below 100% resolution.
So i can’t even use the overhead on my 4090 to increase image quality
A normal SSD is fast enough for WoW and i didn’t even notice any improvements when i upgraded to a faster M.2.
There’s very few games that actually make use of very fast drives (things like Direct Storage, for example Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart is one of those games that benefit).
Make sure your RAM is actually running at 3000Mhz or faster with the XMP profile enabled and 2 sticks in the proper slots for dual channel mode, else you will lose alot of performance.
I would recommend leaving particles on good or higher.
What you can and should tweak though is the compure effects (it can kill FPS in some spots with volumetrics like fog), turn it down 2 notches from max.
Also water quality has a big impact in the Amirdrassil zone.
If you are aiming for high refreshrates i would also not go above 7 for view distance and environmental details, since those settings impact CPU like i mentioned above.
Everything else can be maxed or mostly maxed out on any modern “gaming” GPU
Those addons shouldn’t have any meaningful impact on FPS.
If you are planning to upgrade CPU keep eye out for 5700X3D. It is only few percent slower than 5800X3D but much cheaper (about 240 euros vs 340-360 euros of 5800x3D), though obviously you might be able to find used 5800X3D for reasonable price. It would be very cheap upgrade for pretty big boost in WoW and other games which benefit from more cache (Factorio, Stellaris and other Paradox games like Eu4 etc). Just make sure to updat BIOS on your motherboard so it supports the newer CPU.
While i agree that it is a nice upgrade, i think it would be better to save some money and upgrade to AM5 instead.
This way you would have access to much faster CPUs for the next couple years and also, very important, DDR5 (which gives a nice boost in min FPS).
If he had something like a 2nd or 3rd gen Ryzen i would recommend just getting the 5700/5800X3D.
The upgrade from a 5800X to a X3D is between 25-30% in WoW.
Going to a 7800X3D would be about 50%.
Or just wait for the 9800X3D which will give another 15% probably.
