From laptop to desktop

Hello guys,

This is my first ever post on WoW foruns and I’m looking for some advice. I play on a laptop with the following specs: I7 7700hq, 16Gb RAM, GTX 1050ti and 128Gb+1Tb (SSD+HDD)

Since I mostly use my laptop as a desktop, meaning it stands on the table ALL the time, I thought it would be wise to exchange it for a desktop connected to my 4k TV and play from the couch

Was thinking what kind of upgrade would be nice, if you could advise in this way. I don’t care about brands, I want the best my money can buy (price/performance)

Budget would be 700-800€ and I play mostly WoW, LoL/HotS, Cities Skylines and Frostpunk. Would like to keep it worthy for around 3 years

Sorry if I come as a bit demanding, I just want to leave as much info as I can

Thanks for all help

Given that the Euro & the Dollar are pretty much at parity, my recommendation would be to look up Paul’s Hardware on YouTube & check out his (monthly) parts list guides; he doesn’t typically cover ~$7-800 - more £500 or $1000 - but it’ll get you into what kind of parts will be available for the budget you’re working with.

WoW likes CPU a lot while Frostpunk likes GPU a lot. You will be likely looking at minimum for R5 3600, 16GB RAM, RX 5700 XT / RTX 2070 Super. To some extent GPU could be found on the second hand market at a good price. Pauls Hardware and other good YT channels will have more detailed lists. If you secure a good GPU at a good price you then will be able to bump the CPU specs. 3+ years of very good performance would be like 8-12 core CPU (R9 3900X, Intel 9900K and newer refreshes if they get cheap enough).

You will have to make alot of sacrifices in terms of visual quality if you want to play in native 4k with that budget.
If you go below native 4k the image quality will get blurry.

You could get a pretty good setup with a Ryzen 3600, 16GB of RAM and an AMD 5500 XT for around 815€.

But like i said, the GPU will not be enough for 4K at high settings and 60 FPS.
You will have to lower it down to maybe setting 5 and that is not even guaranteed.

I wasn’t expecting that tbh. Thought that by now a medium range gaming pc would easilly do 4k

I supose that if it’s not native 4k it will kinda look like my Xbox, but that’s not what I’m going for. Do AMD CPUs work well with WoW now? I built a FX8350 machine a while back and boy did I regret it! Worked fine for every other game at the time but not WoW

Thank you all for your input, guess I’ll hold to this laptop for now

Yes the Ryzen 3000 series is only like 10% slower in WoW than the fastest Intels.
But you get more cores for the same price or less, which makes them more future proof (the PS5 and the Xbox Series X will also use 16 thread Ryzen 3000 CPUs).

Also, yes the FX CPUs are the worst CPUs AMD has ever released.
They were even slower than the Phenom CPUs in WoW.
But times change and now Intel has to play the catch up game.

I was very much against using AMD CPUs for WoW until the latest gen myself.
Last november i upgraded from my 3rd gen I5 to a new Ryzen 3900x and i did not regret it.
