New to the game this year, picked it up during the pandemic and can’t put it down. Been playing Frost since i started in May, its great fun but seems to be in a terrible position DPS wise across most logs and tier lists.
Is it a problem with the spec or do we just rely heavily on scaling from Crit etc?
On the one hand we’re heavily reliant on crit as we need 33.33% to guarantee our heaviest hitters critting against most mobs. Since this is the start of the expansion, secondary stats aren’t available in that amount yet, making that 33% mark is miles out of reach.
On the other, the spec has a number of issues: -
We now only have one build - Glacial Spike is no longer viable, so we’ve gone from having 2 viable talents on each row to just 1.
Winter’s Chill and Fingers of Frost charges are easily wasted because they overlap - using an FoF Ice Lance on a target with WC on it consumes both procs without any extra damage or refunding the FoF.
We were nerfed twice before SL release for no real reason -
November 9th: Ice Lance damage reduced by 10% and Splitting Ice secondary target reduced from 80% to 65%
November 16th: All damage reduced by 4%.
Some one at Blizz had it in for us before this expansion even started.
Thanks for the reply, good to know the finer details. I’ve pretty much been following builds from online for the most part, learned to Sim etc and it does seem that only one talent set up is viable.
Went Glacial Fragments which hits nicely on AOE but single target i feel so useless as you say procs are so hard to utilise 100% with overlap.
Those nerfs are extremely unnecessary, one nerf maybe but all three?
Guess i’ll keep plugging away and see what happens. Thanks again, this has helped
I don’t think the scaling will help enough. Not even nearly enough. Frost mages need a 15% buff at the very least to be competitive again. That being said, if you’re not doing any “hardcore” content (mythic raids etc) then you can just play whatever you feel like. Maybe you’ll get some discrimination from other players if they see you’re not playing fire, but honestly, I’m still able to out-dps 99% of pugs as frost.
Is there really any difference in the legendaries? I’ve got Fragments atm just so i can clear in Mythic+, does Slick Ice add much to ST DPS as bosses this week i am just tickling
You are half right. Most of our damage doesn’t come from frostbolts, however, more Frostbolts = more FoFs, more icicles and more BFs. It also means more crits, which means more Icy veins. And that all adds up to much more damage overall.
