Future of Dalaran and the Kirin Tor

Would you rather play bad D&D every week or play no D&D.

I would rather there be an opportunity for “low/mid-quality” RP to exist so that there’s the possibility for it to potentially evolve and for people to hone the skill/hobby into “high-quality.”

This.

It’s… actually kind of staggering/eye-opening that people are in here shouting about ‘The Fun Police’ when really it’s just the most-recent incident of people being tired of others running roughshod over an area/lore/race because it suits them/they don’t care about it.

Like, I have no horse in this particular race, but I already know which side I’d go with based off the attitudes here.

My god, you’re miserable. This is just typical elitist mentality.

When will people learn what you enjoy in RP is a complete subjective experience that differs from person to person? If you don’t want to attend a weekly market because you think it’s cringe then don’t attend. It’s as easy as that.

We all know which side of this I’m on in general but if I had to give a practical reason - Halfhill’s phasing has always been wonky 'cos of the farm.

Yes. Not only that, I’d much rather play D&D with people who aren’t judgmental to players who have different ideas.

I don’t know if its changed recently, but BfA-Slands events were fine there for the most part. The only area truly locked up if people were in groups was the farm area itself. This might’ve changed however, I don’t know.

Agreed.

No horse in this race but like, surely, if you’re fundraising for survivors, you’d go to a more metropolitan area rather than a rural end of the southern-most continent, home to a relatively isolationist people?

People are gunna host events where they want their wondow dressing, ultimately. Even if it makes little sense.

For me it still wholly depends on whether the area was being actively–or even semi-actively–by another group before the market people started coming in for one night a week.

If there wasn’t I’m just not seeing an issue – the NPCs won’t complain, they’re pixels and code. Unless Skynet is starting with outdated content in World of Warcraft, we’re probably safe.

If there are roleplayers who actively use the space throughout the week then hopefully they’ve spoken to the organisers. The game’s a finite space and we’re required to share or compromise, regardless of what our opinions are toward the quality and coherence of each other’s roleplay.

Besides, I think having varying ‘levels’ of RP is beneficial to server health in the long run…? To keep the hobby accessible to new roleplayers. It is always better to support those who are learning the ropes than to be critical of the type of roleplay they engage in (I’ve commonly seen Market roleplay branded as ‘second-life roleplay’, for example…?)

It poses the risk of driving new players away- for example, attending and engaging with markets was largely how I first learned the basics of roleplay. I probably would have felt disheartened and deterred had I learnt about how others perceive it.

Trade roleplay has potential and can be just as transformative as other forms. Since then I’ve gained experience and branched out to other types.

We all start somewhere.

Imo the only thing this discourse has managed to do so far is deter me from roleplaying in Pandaria at all, what with all the gatekeepy, territorial and elitist vibes I’m getting from all of this.

And I wasn’t even planning to attend the market.

I think it’s good that people explain what it is that actually bothers them about the concept. I don’t think ill of people who ask others to respect the lore and tone of a zone, nor do I wish ill for people who organize the market - I hope polite communication can help people find an agreement that both parties would be content with.

Despite of this, the NPCs we see in Dawn’s Blossom don’t seem particularly distrusting of strangers, be they from the Alliance or the Horde. As for the dojo, I touched it briefly in the previous comment - I’m not familiar with how this particular building is treated in canon. Is it ever only used by monks to train in, or is it on occasion used by the villagers as a community center like some of the Chinese Wuguan were, given it’s also the Mayor’s home? I don’t have an answer to this, and maybe it’s up to headcanon.

To me this example has a bit different tone to it, because I don’t see Nighthaven being a similarly important stop along the road for travelers in Kalimdor, both due to its location it being a haven for druids in specific, except during holidays like the Lunar Festival. Meanwhile Dawn’s Blossom is described as an important stop for travelers in the Jade Forest, but I don’t know what Warcraft.wiki sources that on, if anything.

Regardless, I do understand your point. As I wrote previously, I think there are other places in the world that could suit this type of an event, but I’m trying to understand the details of why this one is considered so abrasive.

Uhm ok, did I offend you?

I think there are characters there that basically do nothing but social events and hub RP and that’s kind of it, and to some extent yeah, that’s not using a character to it’s fullest potential as a vehicle for storytelling.

…But also, like, who cares? If someone just wants to do social RP then let them, it quite literally doesn’t hurt anyone. For me personally, I quite like having hubs available and open public events to place a character at because it either lets me remember who they are outside of events, or it lets me actually develop a character on my own terms at my own pace whereas constant combat events and conflict RP doesn’t - not for me at least.

I don’t really see how it would come up as an issue if no one was there. That there are complaints about it - ones that were even directly quoted as examples - says that it was in use, surely?

No one here being all “just share the space! Bad RP is still good RP!” would say the same thing if it was a bunch of Illidari colonising Stormwind’s cathedral as their base of operations, we can all be for real about that, right?

The cynic in me wants to wager we’ll suddenly see a surge in Pandaren-only guild events which conveniently only happen in Dawn’s Blossom on Tuesday from 19:00 - 00:00 server time, butt up against everyone else, and go away as soon as the Market feels sufficiently gatekept.

(I’m joking, that probably won’t happen. And strictly speaking the more RP the merrier. The ideal situation is we’ll see both sides getting together peaceably and combining their efforts!)

I attended the market several times, had fun, the people were friendly and I even met some new fellow Pandaren RP’ers. It’s just a bit wierd it’s there of all places but I’ve seen far worse, even from Blizzard’s own writing. I can live with it.

I’d say it’s a good chance for Pandaren to visit and add some Pandaren cultural flavor to the event themselves if it’s lacking. Bring some more RP to Pandaria and maybe even convince some others to give it a try.
