So i’m updated game to the new patch and then when i’m launch, it starts to play cinematic but the screen is black and i hear only the sound. Whole system is frozen, shift+enter, alt+ctrl+del, and windows button doesnt work as they should, so i can only reset my computer. I’m tried to use repair option in battlenet application but its says that there is no files which requires repair. So i finally reinstalled the game which tooks me few hours to download 70GB but there is still no changes - game freezes system after launch with black screen and sound of cinematic. I’m tried to wait untill cinematic (sound) will end but after this is only silence and black screen. Any suggestions what is going on?

Exactly the same problem here, Ryzen 3600, GTX 1080 Ti and Windows 10. It stops happening in windowed mode though - happens in windowed full screen and full screen. Maybe you’re lucky too, if you still have a Config.wtf in your WTF Folder, you can set
SET gxMaximize “0”
i copied wtf folder before reinstall to save my addon configs. I tried your suggestion but it doesnt change anything, still that same problem.
Edit, i paste wtf folder in to wrong place. Now its worked in windowed mode but…its still windowed mode so i set fullscreen mode in ingame options and the game running nice through about 10 seconds and then freeze system again…Something is wrong with fullscreen mode then 
i have the same problem playing under linux. yesterday everything was still working fine. setting SET gxMaximize “0” does not solve the problem for me
Hopefully when they fix it or Windows it will just fix it on Linux as well, probably not a Wine stack problem if it’s the same error Windows users are getting, but that is just a guess. Full screen / windowed control in linux might also be tricky since you have wine and your desktop/compositor stuff on top of wow that can control how it is displayed. But you might find more technical help in the linux community forums or github than here.
Amarham, did your game launch in Windowed mode or still in full screen mode? Since I was already in windowed full screen mode, just changing that one line might not have been enough. Maybe cutscenes always launch in full screen? Not sure. My config file also contains this line:
SET playIntroMovie “9”
Maybe this lets you skip the cinematic altogether, but well, my game continued to freeze even during login screen - but not in windowed mode
I used your advice and changed it to windowed mode by config file. Game running smoothly on windowed mode but still freeze my computer when i run fullscreen(windowed) mode in game options menu. Everything runs perfect on windowed mode so i pass the cinematic and now launching starts with login screen. But still on fullscreen game freeze at “connection” phase Looks like i need to play on windowed mode till blizzard release some patch for prepatch XD
yeah i’m pretty sure when the bug is fixed for windows it will run smoothly on linux again too. up until now i have played wow on linux for many years and usually it ran absolutely fine.
good to hear! maybe hiding your taskbar, manually setting the window size to match your full screen and finding a way to hide the “windows top bar” of the window can be a workaround for now, i’ll try it
I hope they at least read this to know it is definitely a bug on their full screen mode coding end instead of closing/burying this with “did you update their graphics drivers and is your pc strong enough to run wow?”, one can dream

for all linux gamers: updating wine to wine staging 5.19 fixed it for me. i got an empty character screen upon login but the characters appeared after about 10 min
I’ve been having this issue to, although i often only froze after a while (think 20 to 30 minutes or so) but a complete freeze only happend today. I will try the config file option to if it happens again. Had you tried reinstalling aswell already?
I’m reinstalled game yesterday and it doesnt solve the problem.
Update: After last little patch (16.10.2020) when i change to fullscreen in options while playing the game running smoothly on fullscreen. So i quit the game to update my addons. But when i launch the game again problem still exist - freezing at login screen
