Game is trying to render 4k on a 1080p monitor

Hello.

I’ve got an odd one.

I recently house sat for a friend and used their 4k monitor when playing WoW as I brought my PC (it was a month, I needed to raid!)

When I’ve brought it back home and connected it to my home rig, WoW looks extremely weird on my 1080p monitors. All of my resolutions are set to 1080, including on Windows, NVIDIA and WoW.

What I’ve worked out the problem to be, is that the game looks like it’s trying to render a 4k image on a 1080p monitor, which is causing a high pixel density, so everything looks WAY too sharp and even breaks the text. It isn’t noticable in the graphics, but where it becomes a huge issue is in the text. It’s too hard to read (and yes before you say it, my eyes are fine)

So far I’ve tried:

  • Reinstalling WoW (deleted all left over folders)
  • Messed around with NVIDIA’s scaling settings
  • Reinstalled my graphics drivers
  • crying

The closest I’ve come to a resolution is knocking the DirectX version in-game from 12 to 11. But this hasn’t completley fixed the issue.

If anyone has any ideas or solutions, or has come across this before, I would love you forever!

Outside of the game, Rename your …\World of Warcraft_retail_\Interface\AddOns folder to Addons.old

In game, open a chatbox and type /console cvar_default

Restart the game.

Also, there is almost never a reason to ‘re-download’ or ‘re-install’ World of Warcraft. If that’s ever the case then something on your PC is probably broken, not the game.

99% of these issues are caused by a config setting or an actual in game bug that you cannot solve anyway.
