Gear Score Addons – A Plague on the Game

Gear score addons are a crutch for beginners that have no place in this game and should be blocked entirely. These addons encourage and reinforce toxic behavior, directly contradicting the spirit of the game and even Blizzard’s own Code of Conduct (42673). They exclude skilled players simply because they refuse to install them, and they create an artificial barrier that hurts the community more than it helps.

I’ve personally seen fully BiS Naxx-geared players declined from groups just because they don’t use a gear score addon. Meanwhile, clueless raid leaders rely on it as their sole metric, leading to boosted, underperforming players getting into raids while genuinely skilled players are left out.

Gear should be a tool, not a gatekeeping number. Performance, awareness, and mechanics matter far more than an arbitrary addon’s rating. These addons dumb down the game, promote laziness, and should be banned from the API.

Funny when they ask for 900+ gs for MC

Even some retards ask 850+ for strat

Frankly I have no idea what those arbitrary addon’s rating mean and I won’t download it ever either. But it’s an issue for sure.

just say you’re 1k gs and u get inv =)

the vibes im getting here are “i was refused kara/raid for having low gear score, so remove it so i can get a group and essentially get boosted pls”.

here’s a fun fact just as a side-note: you don’t need the gearscore addon for someone else to see your gearscore if they got the addon.

even without gearscore addon, skilled players will be able to tell what gear you have at a glance (through the visuals on your character) without having to inspect you.

my guess is you were invited to a raid or a group and showed up in less-than-optimal gear, with predictable results.

people aren’t looking to carry your burdens broski.

This “arbitrary addon’s rating” is in fact quite precise and serves as a very good reference point of how good someone’s gear is. It helps filter out brats trying to get into AQ in levelling greens and dungeon blues, which no amount of skill and awareness can compensate for

@Potatomilk.
I’m the full Naxx geared guy in the story of all this so there goes your rather judgemental weak argument into the drain. I do in fact carry my weight in the entire group/raid it is not the other way around ;). I just refuse to participate in a low IQ addon that doesn’t show you I’m the rank 1 warrior for example.

@Fox
It is actually impossible for skill level to be precisely shown by it’s factually arbitrary rating system. I mean greens and blues are quite noticeable if you go to inspect people as you should. And if it works the other way around when people inspect you even then It still is a fake number that doesn’t show you anything. I could easily for example see a person getting outperformed with a certain lack of gear compared to another who has everything. Logs enough of those kinds of people.

then you should have no problem finding raids or groups… why u maed?

aight man. thats fine, but unfortunately there’s nothing you can do to change peoples meta mentality.
the gearscore addon, cringe as it is, is very meta.
you’re yelling at the clouds here.

I’m not mad I’m trying to find a workaround that doesn’t involve me getting an addon that is polluting my game with nonsense because it’s required for make believe reasons by people that believe in fairy numbers.

I could ask like Hankylol previously mentioned someone else my meaningless number and go with it but it feels fake and cringe.

I still think it shouldn’t be forced down someone’s throat as a requirement to play the game. GIGA TOS.

Make your own grp and the issue goes away

I’ve always just said i don’t use the addon and link items that aren’t trash, or say im last phase bis or this phase bis if its actually true. Depending on what class you play that may have varying results but as feral druid on alliance getting groups isn’t really the problem.

I can understand people wanting to filter. You can get welfare epics from the vendor for t1/t2 and when most of player power is tied into tier sets, getting the bare minimum to make your character function isn’t much of an ask when you get that from doing dungeons that people aren’t asking for GS on…

So yes its a bit of a stretch people asking 1k GS for BWL/AQ. But people wanting at least MC/BWL level of gear to do AQ/Kara and sanctified gear to go into naxx isn’t too much of an ask imo. People don’t wanna carry someone in a pug.

I know. I never said GS shows your skill. GS shows players’ gear. It saves you the trouble because you can specify which level of gear is needed for a raid or dungeon and then instantly kick someone if you see that they are trying to get a free boost at the expense of others by sneaking their way into content they should not yet be doing.

If only you knew how many times my Kara group couldn’t beat the last bosses because the leader didn’t use GS requirement and instead said “be geared”. People just show up in MC levels of equipment and think they are geared enough to clear a dungeon designed for AQ-geared people and then the leader cannot kick them because he feels bad about it and he thinks it was his fault for being ambiguous.

If you have GS addon it’s very simple. You let people know what their gear should be and if someone joins without meeting the requirement you can instantly see their GS, just kick them right away and it would be their own fault for trying to deceive you.

I swear you are the only voice of reason in those forums. Keep doing what you do man

Just skip the pugs where it is necessity.

A lot of guys ask about gs in LFG, but yet invite and inspect you as normal behavior. The braindead “whisper your gs or kick” can go into Global Ignore List and stay there forever, most of them anyway are bad leaders and players, that cant handle this situation in another way.

Anyway you can fake gs with clown useless offset epics and this guys will never pay attention, because they are just bad.

Gearscore should be used as a guide but not something to exclude people from doing content that is easily doable by them.

For example you want someone geared for Karazhan Crypts, not someone whose gearscore 450, fresh 60, no tier at all. As i class this as a boost, that person will be doing nothing compared to the other 4 carrying.

That being said, yea having people say forming “COIN RUN” Strath… BE GEARED PUMPER…

its like ok bro the dungeon is designed for levelers pre-60, you dont need to be 850+ GS to do it with ease.

as a player of both now, this is probably the retail players lol, not wanting to spend time just playing the game, they want dungeon clear time to be less then 5 minutes so they can go back to standing in City afking lol.

The point is to do it fast. As with naxx gear you better do the run in 20 minutes with full geard party then spend 1 hour there. That’s understandable.

The only drawback of GS in classic is that it’s not such objective as in later addons, because in classic higher ilvl doesn’t always mean better (and in some situations for some specs combination of t1/t2/t2,5/zg can be better then t3 in sod because of set bonuses - ofc i mean outside of naxx with sanctify mechanic). And on top of that, different people using different GS addons in sod (there are 2 popular addons, and 1 of them also have 2 different versions with different calculation, so in fact its 3 different addons - in some situations difference can be 100 gs or even more)

You can try making your own groups, that way you decide what criteria is used when choosing people you want to group with. That’s what I do. Pick up all the people in blues, greens with a low GS. you might learn something after running a few groups.,

Just today I recruited players for a regular Strat full coin runs, business as usual, nothing fancy.

Everyone just entered in the instance, then the heal suddenly wakes up and leave.

I asked him why, he replied I was “only 980 GS”

:no_mouth:

Toxic player for sure. Ignore and replace
