Gearing, stat priority etc

Hey fellow WoW players. Usually I don’t really min/max but me and my friends decided to go all in with TWW.

I would like to ask about stat priotity and gearing. I know our best stat is always our primary stat (strenght/intellect/agility), but at what point the primary stat amount overwrite the secondary stat prio? In case I wasn’t clear enough, here is an Example

I’m a DW Obli Frost DK and my current stat prio is :

  • Strenght
  • Critical Strike
  • Mastery

I got a drop today, which is a 603 ilvl item, it’s basically 13 ilvl higher than my currently equipped gear, however one of the two secondary stats are not my priority on it. Instead of Crit+Mastery, it’s like Crit+versality. Obviously since it’s higher ilvl, it gives you more stamina and strenght. With this exact item, its 300 extra strenght, but with switching off the Item I lose on about 500-ish mastery. Is it worth it? My mastery is around 44-45%. Is it worth the trade? At what point does a secondary stat start losing it’s value? I just want to be able to make my own decisions with gearing and talents so I want to learn this. I DO not want to watch guides after every 2 steps I make.

Thank you for the detailed/correct explanations in advance.

People usually simcraft when they’re unsure.

Might help. But if you don’t want to watch guides ect then just pick the higher ilevel gear. If you want to minmax you’re going to be wanting to use third party tools to do so.

In 99,999 % of cases ilvl >>> ALL.

For three reasons :

  • First. Primary stat value is the stat with the most weight. So 1 point of strength is worth 15 points of something else.
NOTE : I don’t remember the exact value. It might be different than 15.

  • Second. In your comparison, you mention extra 300 strength vs. extra 500 mastery. Its NOT true. You trade 500 vers for 500 mastery. PLUS 300 strength. So you have to compare that. And 99.99% of cases, 500 vers + 300 strenth >>>> 500 mastery.

  • Third. Items with more ilvl have more stats on them. So a 560 ilvl Crit/Vers will have less Crit/Vers than the equivalent item in 570. So more ilvl == more stats. In the example you put, you would be trading 700 vers + 300 strength for 500 mastery. 700 vers >>> 500 mastery.

So. Because of those 3 reasons … ilvl >>> ALL.

EXCEPT : Rings and trinkets. Rings because they dont have primary stat. And trinkets because the on-use effect might be more beneficial to you than pure ilvl.

Wowhead, Icy-veins, and murlok io for m+ and pvp has plenty of guides and stats check for your class.

Stat priority is something you do with 2 items of the same ilvl.

This. Item level trumps all. You only compare two pieces for secondary stats if they are the same ilvl or very very close (like 571 vs 574).
