Genuine curiosity: why is Ion Hazzikostas' name pronounced like it is?

careful with all that backpedaling, you may pull something

what am i backpedaling lol ? stretch before you reach for such outlandish conclusions

Ian, John, Iain, Ion, John, Sean, Sian, Shean, Jean, Evan, Juan, Ivan, Ifan, Jonne, Shane, . the list is endless. Depends which bit of Europe Ian was travelling through. All comes from the same silly name. Three little letters and two vowels.

Actually comes from the ‘Kroetin dictionary… I’yave as in Yus I’yave ay phown’
Means to have and to hold and to play Warcraft… FOR EVER.

I am 100% right on this no jokes. Hatzikostas is a Greek Surname and Ion comes from the word Ιωαννης. here is a quote from Google ‘‘Hazzikostas is a Greek surname and its very common surname is Greece. His real name maybe was Iωαννης and he made it into ion for style.’’

At some point in history, someone name Ion - increasingly tired of repeating ‘Yon’ & getting ‘Ian?’ as a reply - decided that Ian was a suitably acceptable variant of their name… leading to said Mr Hazzikostas adopting this way of saying his name.

Those who know the true way to say it, from the right parts of the world, will do so to fit with their culture.

There is another light hearted topic within his name, but that would take the course of this thread to unintended places.

I just want to chip in on one last comment that while the guys from Romania(myself included) have provided proper way of pronounciation for Ion ,this is from the point that his name is Romanian in origin which i don’t belive so .

Based on his Greek familly name it is safe to asume Ion should be pronounced as Greek people do it ,regardless of which nation his name comes from it depends where he is originating from that his name will have the “proper” sound.

So if in Greece Ion is being called as Ian then that is the way we should call him.Again i don’t know how people in Greece do pronounce Ion.(the youtube videos aren’t good to use as markers because it’s roughly not the same for Romanian)

Did this really warrant a topic over google?
