Give Back Unholy Presence and old Runes

Hello There

Maining DK since WotLK.

I really Loved my unholy dk, played him in different guilds, ambitious guilds
where i rly often hit legendary logs and some top3 of server stuff, to familiar guilds just doing HC clears.

I just loved how the unholy rota played, a bit complex where you had the
feeling after a long bossfight where you really did good, you have just finished
a great piece on the piano.

Much buttons, you really had to press perfectly, to not
mess up the runes, and fast paced with that unholy presence where your gcd was
1 sec.

It was for my feeling just the perfect rota, complex, engaging, fast and if you did all right, really rewarding.

but with legion the first hard hit, taking away
the really unique resource system 3 different runes and runic power to runes
and runic power from 4 resources to 2, and taken away unholy presence, which
for my part did really contributed to the fun (fast paced)

well, some artifact stuff on the weapon did a bit compensate that, but then with bfa, with another take away, unholy plays rly bad in fun aspect for me, so naked
just a shadow what the class was used to be (I meen here in first place the fun aspect, not DMG)

It’s good to see Blizzard is going back, and try to repair the damage they had done to those classes, but honestly in my opinion, they are not going far enough.

What was really great is, that you had not a single gcd free in fight, there was
really zero downtime and i meen zero! Its just not fun watching your char
and waiting for runes to recharge, if you played right you had no downtime with unholy dk, that’S fun!, but you had to do resource management to not mess
up with the runes (basicly converting frost and blood runes into Death runes, to use scourge strikes) so you had resource management, but no downtime, thats
great class design.

now you have no resource management or close to none (not caping runic power and not more than 3 runes free) and downtime, thats just straight bad class design in my opinion. If you do all right, your rota should be fluently!

So basicly if you see the unholy dk or respectively the dk in general, in the same light than me, or agree with my point of view, bump the topic please.

Maybe we can found an ear on blizzard.

Greetings Broxxs

I off-mained DK at MoP and the old runes system was still there. I loved it, when I returned at Legion I was really sad to see it gone. Doing some research it appeared that a lot of people actually liked these changes- I don’t get it.

But there was that thing with certain talents changing your Blood, Frost or Unholy runes into Death runes, and that may be a way to get a middle ground:
Revert the runes changes, and make a talent to turn all your runes into Death runes. The increase in freedom of rotation offered by such a talent should be enough to compete with others DPS talents.

No, just no.
If you feel nostalgic, play classic.
Keep DK’s nice and clean.
Frost => frost runes only
Unholy => unholy runes only
…and so on.

If you don’t like it play fury warrior.

You want us to play our death knights… On WoW classic…?
Also, perhaps we enjoy retail and the current systems, just not the current state of death knights?

There’s no “frost” or “unholy” runes. They are all the same, with just a different name and coat of paint.
DK were nice and clean before, with certain spells using certain runes. I remember the intense satisfaction of having such a clean rotation. And the feeling of a unique class mechanic, not just a slightly different energy bar.

And just, the flavor of knowing that Path of Frost used specifically a rune of Frost, and Death Gate 1 Unholy.
Army of the Dead using one of each rune added to the sensation of power, as you needed all your arsenal to summon it.

Now it became a messy spam fest where you stress over constantly having 3 runes charging.
As I suggested, if you want to use the current gameplay:

I fully support you. The old rune system and presence is what modern DK needs to make it play interesting. Proper resource management set you apart you among other DKs.

Nostalgia is like a small bonus. The concept of runes and presence needs to be returned and simply changed to a modern WoW.

Another yes for presences and another no for rune system. Old rune system was annoying, clunky and focus absorbing for no reason. We already have two resources compared to most classes having one~

imagine having something like a skill floor in this game, crazy concept you are talking about there.

What i really like about the current unholy is the fact that in its basic rotations, i dont have to look at cooldowns to much… just my 3 resources and procs…

Gives me the feeling of a natural flow, much more then when we had 3 different rune types, which much more felt like cooldowns to me… sure we have cooldowns, but not on our most used skills…

I enjoy the current resource system of unholy quite a lot, best of any class in game

I dont care about runes but I am ok I do not care about presenses but will live with them.
I want icy touch back a second desease and a purge efect on it. I also want desecrated grounds.
Also pressing uh transformation abomination uh frenzy apocalypse to burst feels bad put uh frenzy off the gcd it is retarded…

think we had the purge in bfa alfa/beta, but then they decided DH didnt had enough and gave them the purge

the second disease can come IF its shadow, currently anything not affected by mastery will just be a hindrance to shadowlands unh, necro disease from wod would be a nice idea

necrotic could even be turned into unh game play by making the stacks go up when u pop a wound so in the end u would extend its duration like fester did in wod

necrotic and ebon fever would make great additions to the unh tool kit
ebon fever could be the equivalent of the demon hunter 5% magic debuff (not stackable)

There are already many classes like this, which existed back then as well. There was no need to dumb down DK, there were already alternatives for people who wanted a simple gameplay. Now, people who want a more challenging rotation can only remember of what DK once were.

Play Demon Hunter. Or Warrior. Or Druid. I’m not against easy options, but I want options for complexity as well. We used to have both, now we only have the easy ones.

Back in wrath we regenerated all 6 runes at the same time at a set 10 second interval, this meant that you could not be screwwed by the RNG of the new rune system that came in during cataclysm.

As such, the wotlk rune system was perhaps the least clunky system in the game, granting you a set number of actions per cycle to attack your foe in various ways.

The current 3 rune system is not like this, it provides a single option at all times, it cuts out constantly or drastically overcaps with no way to conrol this happening and provides absoloutely no investment for you to put into your character.

The original system allowed you to easily fight opponents but also get very invested into the technical aspects of the death knight, it was, in effect, an ideal system for combat because it was not only simple to get into but also more complex when trying to improve upon it without any nuisance mechanics holding your rotation ransom for long periods of time, if you went into downtime or overcap then it was because you overdid it or reserved too much yourself and not because the system was preventing you from acting. It was slower but the runes were drastically more powerful and meaningful because of it.

The current rune system is weak, meaningless, frustrating and the worst part about it is that it is over-convoluted with mechanics that don’t make sense and are actually not even explained very well in game.

Just sayin, but there was a reason just about everyone rolled blood tap in warlords of draenor.

I agree completely, but i honestly wouldnt mind keeping the new rune system if it was less RNG-based. Too much lockdown as the user above me said, and on top of that there are limited options that perform inherently better than most others, locking you down even more. What i noticed is that on the recent Alpha build they are reducing the RNG element on Eclipse for Balance Druids, and was quite shocked. Classes and specs that are already solid are getting reworks, while we are still sitting on the most RNG based rotation in the whole game, and with poor class design to boot. It is still early i know, but oh god, i thought nothing could surprise me anymore. But there it is :stuck_out_tongue:

The problem here is that this in a bit of an oxymoron, you are essentially asking for non-alcoholic alcohol, which of course would be impossible as then it wouldn’t actually be alcohol.

The current rune system is designed to be used with RNG and does not work well without RNG, blood for example has to break the rules on runes just to make it work by having heart strike generating 15 RP and not 10… however, this still makes 50% of your runes completely useless at any given time unless specifically speccing into rune strike.
