It wasn’t much, you would never bring a Paladin for that sweet Blessing of Wisdom or Blessing of Kings, but it was always a nice buff you were able to distribute.
More importantly tho, it added flavour to the class. It was never on par with any other party buff or debuff, it was just cool. I’m already playing a borderline support/utility class with Lay on Hands, BoP, Freedom, Sac that are all very situational mid-combat.
It did bring Paladins to raids due to there buffs. They removed it and found that Paladins offered nothing, then they gave us a combat res, Intercession, to make people pick us.
