Either you can choose between Horde and Alliance and the faction makes the choice for you, or is there any of the two you like the animations/appearance of more?
Both races are very flexible and you don’t have to stick with stereotypes but generally Goblins are more profit focused and more of a “the end justify the means” type, while Gnomes are more knowledge focused and put more time in their work.
If it was a schoolpaper the Gnome would turn in a good paper after hard effort, the Goblin would have taken someone else’s assignement of Google and changed the text and hope it would pass.
Edit: I love trend breaking Gnomes, like Gnome thieves, pirates etc. Like that npc in some Kul tiran zone

Gnomes are really the more war-like of the two races. Look at Vixi, each time I meet her she keeps pointing her weapon at me.

I’d say it depends on your desired character. Each has their stereotype which isn’t actually bad and I’ll fight people over the validity of writing in line with established ideals and owning it but you can do a lot that’s different if you like.
Twisting the standard and breaking the mold gives you something fresh to work with, though you’ll still need to consider specific goblin and gnome things about them. A character isn’t their race and the two have a lot of overlap as their faction’s resident short tech-head.
Speaking of which, consider mechagnomes too. They give some interesting angles to pursue about gnome politics and trans… gnomeism?
It’d be a lot easier to help if I knew your character concept better. Aesthetic means a lot of things and isn’t a very helpful term.

I guess it comes down to this, I think I might make a Goblin. I’ve always been an old school RPG fan I loved fighting Goblins in deep dungeons in DND or old FF games. Not to mention there is pretty nice Transmog you can get being a Rogue.

I would say goblins are more flexible. Gnomes are almost always engineers or mages. With goblins you can be anything as long as you are greedy.
