Going for Loremaster

Got to do it all basically. SL, Legion + WoTLK is an exception. Anyone know the best place to start? Gonna do the old world first, so do I just roll up in a zone in Kalimdor/Eastern Kingdoms and start questing?1

The Old World would be okay to start. You’ll realise doing EK / Kalimdor that it is going to take some time. I spread it over a couple of years, ideally doing each of the different Loremaster achievements on a different character, e.g. one for EK, one for Kalimdor, etc.

I also combined it with other achievements so I got all the allied races up to max level while completing an expansion.

If you try and do it all on a high level character you may run into problems where you have to weaken a mob and do something, where a high level char will just nuke the mob even with nothing equipped. There is the foam sword but I found it didn’t work for one of the Dragonblight quests, tho’ I don’t recall why now. There was a workaround in the Wowhead comments for that quest tho’ that worked. But this is something to consider.

The other side of that coin is trying to do an expansion on a “normal” character, or with XP locked. In Wrath I found most of the zones straightforward but Icecrown was a problem, because of the number of quests that set you against elite(s). I managed the first 12 - 15 with a fully loomed character but it became impossible at some point and I had to turn XP back on, outlevel the zone (Icecrown) and then come back and do it in easy mode.

Apart from that I can’t recall any other “gotchas” but it’s probably worth doing a search on the EU and US forums and looking at the comments on wowhead for the different expansions / Loremaster.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint

I also want to complete Loremaster and wondering what the optimal level on an exp locked character is. I guess 59 is the best one because the gold from quests will also scale and I will earn more compared to level 30 for example. Doing it on an exp locked character has the benefit of gear scaling to your level and with random upgrades you could equip most slots with purple items.
While the maximum level for Chromie is now 61, I saw a forum post that it can’t be used at level 60. That’s why I think the safest option would be 59 until Blizzard fully update all game systems to include level 60.

I just kept making new characters and levelled in the zones I needed starting cata and working my way up. Tho with chromie time it would obvs be different now

@Valanel : I would lock XP, if you go that route, once you have the core abilities of the class you are playing. But yes, with random gear upgrades to blue and purple you should be able, together with a set of heirlooms, to make a strong character.

Something else I recalled, for the OP, is the way shared achievements work. If you split an expansion over several characters, make sure you don’t mix factions. E.g. in Northrend you could do Howling Fjord on an Alli. character and Borean on a Horde character. The Horde guy will see under Northrend Loremaster that he has Borean and Howling Fjord, but if you continue to do the other zones on the Horde guy, the Howling Fjord achiev. won’t count even tho’ it shows as green. So don’t mix factions. This caught me out as I was doing some allied races in Northrend, Maghar Orc and Dark Iron, and I ended up having to redo some zones.
