Going to take an extended break

Hi Friends. TL:DR at the bottom

So I usually disappear for a few months here and there due to work. I’m next due to go in a couple of weeks. But this time I’m not planning on returning excited to play through any new content which Blizz found the time to implement.

Basically, having been back for approximately 3 months now and I have been planning this post for most of the last month. I am just not sure this game is for me anymore. Atleast for the time being.

I’m going to save a wall of text that nobody reads and put bullet points. Edit Yeh, that didn’t happen, TL:DR at the bottom

The game is designed around selling more WoW Tokens. WowTokens should be a fair addition to the game to help those who want to catch up. However I feel the game is being design specifically to sell them to Lazy players, i.e. Legendary system 9.0, and Mage Tower overtuning, and in turned is making the game longer, boring and more frustrating to the players like myself who don’t want to pay more than our month subscription fee.

The Game Design Panda’s to the Hardcore Elite and the Casual Collectors, with very little space in-between - This is a rather broad title, which covers a number of aspects of the game. Ranging from:
Too many systems over complicating the end-game content - Conduits, Soulbinds, Legendaries, Corruption, Essences. What ever happened to everything being in your Talent Tree?
All the rewards for doing basic world content and minimum rewards for doing end-game content. Where are the M+ Transmogs? You can log in and get a free mount by just camping a rare spawn.
Mage Tower being overtuned so only Hardcore Elite can complete it - There is no progression with the MT, you are either good enough to complete it, or you go away empty handed. There’s nothing to help you along the way, there’s no easy mode, so you have the feeling of accomplishment as you work your way to the top. Unforunately, it is just an over tuned mess and it’s pushed more players away than it has made happy.

Mage Tower being overtuned so only Hardcore Elite can complete it
Yes, you did just read this. But it deserves its own title. It was the last straw for me. Honestly, I just feel disappointed with how this has been handled. Yes, I completed 1 challenge, but the 2nd challenge I tried doing, Prot Paladin, after 100 attempts I still hadn’t gotten the first boss down below 40%. One of the problems is, that for some reason 1/2 of my abilities has been taken away (Divine Toll) and then it seems that I have to use abilities that aren’t really useful to me in any other content (Seraphim and Blessed Hammer), I don’t really feel like I’m a playing Prot Paladin and I don’t really feel like I’m making sufficient progress.

I consider myself a good player, but quite frankly this has done nothing but leave me depressed. There are no amount of “Get Gud” comments which is going to change a thing. This is not the sort of game I want to play and it’s the only content Blizzard has put out in half a year.

It doesn’t matter that it’s Christmas vacations. This is live on the servers, there were millions of paying customers trying this content and leaving disappointed. This needed Blizzard developers attention quickly, and they failed us by not stepping in and fixing this. Sorry, if there was a problem in my work over the Xmas period, I would be expected to turn up. I expect the same from any industry.

I’m tired of being an astronaut - I want to be playing a Fantasy Adventure, not flying through Space killing Alien monsters and Ghosts. I appreciate there are certain elements core to WoW Lore that are being explored, but there are a million ways to explore that. There are promising rumours out there, but lets wait and see how it’s handled.

Where’s the storyline - In previous expansions you could choose zones to level through, and pick a storyline/quests to follow. In Shadowlands you have 1 long campaign quest, or level through farming instances and WQ’s. Not for me.

I wouldn’t play this game if I had to pay for it, so I spend all my time in the game making gold so I don’t have to pay - This says it all for me tbh. Making gold is pretty much the only part of the game I’m enjoying at the moment and that certainly has it’s hurdles.

If the game content was more enjoyable, engaging, balanced, rewarding and regularly updated I would have no problem paying £9.99 for it and leaving it at that. It’s just not. Content is stretch out over time at the expense of the player. M+ and Raiding drop rates were reduced and I current have to run 10 M+ a week for a chance a 1 item upgrade. So an M+ is approx 30mins. So that’s 5 hours work for a chance at 1 item upgrade a week. I have 6 characters. Oh and don’t forget I need to farm those Conduit upgrades as well.

I’ll round it off here, but I really could go on for a long time. I’ll just touch on a couple of others areas: Torghast, Forced Content, Boosting, using bag space as challenge of the game. I appreciate that a lot of the things I have said here, some players enjoy. It’s just not for me anymore.

I intend to skip 9.2 with the exception of logging in to get my KSM mount (should only take a couple of weeks). Hopefully 10.0 (if it ever comes), will be and improvement to the game. But quite frankly I don’t trust the current Blizzard to do a good job of it.

**TL:DR ** Game not for me anymore because: Pay 2 Win, Forced Content, Mage Tower, Crap Story, Mage Tower, WoW Tokens, Mage Tower, Lack of Content updates.

(P.S. Sorry in advance, I need my gold for when I come back if the game gets good again).

Sad to see you leave but it’s best to take a break when it’s simply not fun anymore.

Agree with quite a lot of your points. Story, tokens, target audience and they really really dropped the ball concerning the Mage Tower.

Anyway, take care and best of luck at work and whatever game comes next!

See you in 10.0 maybe.

No game comes next. I adventure IRL for a living. So will just focus on that.

Lack of content upgrades is usually the biggest deal breaker.

I honestly hope that 10.0 is going to be the biggest expansion that ever existed, because if not, I would like to know where they have been putting their resources for the past 2 years (yes since 8.3).

Yep middle skill / soft core / majority has little joy atm. 100% sure they expected us to “rise to occasion” and pour more effort / gold.
Hehe naive devs. Very very naive devs.

As unpaid shills write “dont like, then leave”. Thats what players do it seems.
Record selling shadowlands has how many retail only subs?

Naive devs…

I resonate with many of your complaints.
I feel this is directly the result of Blizzard listening to players:

  • it’s all about gear progression, preferably tied to skill => M+ and raid first
  • there is not enough to do => there should be things to grind
  • each (reputation) grind should reward something (beyond another mount) => systems
  • it’s just a menu => fewer talents, more fancy systems
  • the game is trivial if you have BiS => tune for it
  • leveling is just a stupid boring gate => let’s remove it
  • zones should be about max level, also mention GW2 => world quests

The point I definitely agree on:

  • there should be more stories to those interested
  • without gatekeeping
  • token led to p2w and inflation (as the community predicted)
booster sells experience to casual for gold, gives back gold for a token, repeat
  • or you farm gold to earn access to farm gold to earn access to… what about having fun

At this point, considering a lot, the sub should be dropped (or reduced to something nominal). Go for the GW2 model. Whether you’re a veteran playing the same old in BC or you’re a progressive retail player buying your DLC every two years, you paid for it. Sell convenience and fluff to those dedicated enough to make good use of it.

Welcome to the club. Felt much the same, once I did KSM I was like oh… what now?

Best of luck buddy!

I still don’t why understand why they removed KSM being account-wide.

I was so hyped for 9.1 'cuz I was going to get the KSM and gear my Boomy and Mage to have fun.

Now? Now I am unsubbed because Blizzard has some delusional arguments in regards to KSM being account-wide is bad a thing.

/Genuine_Laugh Yeah, I feel you there!

I feel most of your other points as well.

I’m sorry to see you go, but I completely understand, and I hope that adventuring IRL will more than make up for WoW. Happy trails!
