Good class for an older guy?

Hello All

Been playing since launch but lately as I have gotten older my reflexes have really slowed down a bit. I raid on a team that clears heroic each tier and I am good at getting key master. That is the good news. The bad news is the only toon I can play now at a high level for those kind of things is my MM Hunter. Every other class I have tried to continue playing I really lack the numbers to do both keys over 10 and heroic raid.

What would anyone recommend as an easy to master , very simple rotation for an older guy like me to play? No DH please. I need a second toon for a second raid team. Any suggestions and why they are easy?

Probably BM, either of the two Warrior specs, Windwalker, Arcane or Destruction.
I dislike the last two because of their spammy rotations but they are still simple, Out of all the above I had the most fun with Windwalker.

Hunter. Perfect for a group or solo. I prefer marksman spec. Im nearly 60 years old. I love the hunter

Bm hunter hands down, its been widely known as “retirement spec” for years now with good reason, its mobile, has stable dps, and one of the most simple rotations in the game

No shame in loosing a step to age, happens to the best of us, at some point your reactions slow & you either swap to BM or guardian druid & raid tank

Hunter - thats the class you playing.

Designed to perform well in most conditions.

How about an Ele/Restro Shaman ?

Most Elemental Skills have a mirroring heal/support Skills, think doing the exact same thing but in a good way aka Chain-Lightning/Chain-Heal, Purge/Cleanse etc.

Which allows you to combine tons of skills to a single key via harm macro. (there are even mouse-over macros) reducing the need for tons of keys.

My Elemental and Restro Shaman literally have the same UI layout except for earthquake on one and deluge on the other, helping with muscle memory while also allowing you to be more versatile.

Old guy here! probably have more years behind me than in front
Im planning on playing a fire mage this expansion and that seems fairly forgiving, other than that i have played MM hunter a lot and Fury warrior. the great thing about fury is that is is a kind of whack a mole spec, you just hit stuff as it lights up then fill in the gaps.

I managed to clear HC raids and some Mythic bosses in SL and push up to some 20+ keys with my guild before i felt i was holding them back

I would say stay away from healers and tanks. It’s a lot of pressure, I know I burned out and I can’t do it anymore. Not to mention if IRL issues come up you simply cannot take your eyes of the screen for a minute.

Stick to DPS classes that you feel comfortable playing. Take your time to try a bunch of them. Since you’re playing a hunter and you ask this question it must be that you’re interested in something else.

I think ranged DPS in general is the way to go, less punishing than a melee.

I would agree with that for raids, fury was hard to maintain good raid damage due to all the movement for me but its great fun for Mythic+
I quite enjoy tanking on the warrior it feels kinda gritty, like you are a bit of a meat shield in the thick of it! Druid tanking is fairly easy as well not much of a rotation to concentrate on so you can focus on positioning and other stuff.

In relation to Hunter I would say the equivalent or closest to that playstyle is Warlock, in particular Destro Lock.

  1. Long range - so you can keep an eye and everything and not worry about staying in range/avoid mechanics

  2. Large HP pool - live longer/more time to react in addition to healthstones and drain life (not sure if they changed that recently)

  3. Casting class - you can hit cast and look around to observe the environment to avoid mechanics for a moment

  4. Self-teleporter/gate - bind your scroll mouse to up to use your teleporter and get out of a sticky situation in a hurry or setup a gate to use as a backup

Warlock is a solid class, great utility/self-survivability, interesting specs to toy with it that you can never master but still fun to play. PVP is a whole other ball game but PvE you can get the hang of it.

Whenever you’re learning/playing a new class keybinds can make a big difference in how much you enjoy the class. Make it simple but putting your main rotation on for ex: 1-4. Put all the cooldown that are longer than a minute on one row or next to each other. Don’t go bouncing around with your eyes trying to look left to right and all over the place. First master the basic rotation, get a feel for the procs you need to press and then move on to using the cooldowns as the last step. Get comfortable with the class before you try mastering it and using it to it’s max potential.

I’m old too (though not a guy  ). I definitely agree that a dps caster is best.
Personally I play Shadow Priest because I’ve played it for years and, though things change every expansion, it’s usually pretty easy to get back into a good rotation. Lots of suggestions in the thread - give them a go and see what suits you best. I knew the first time I played SP and before I had a clue what I was doing that I was going to be comfortable playing it. You just get a feeling for a class/spec.

Traditionally hunter was that class. Of course I wouldn’t really have said that about MM in Shadowlands, but BM hunter has always been quite simplistic and the ability to dps while moving without needing to stop and time casts makes it a lot easier.

BM hunter is like playing a melee dps without having to dance around like an idiot dodging everything.

Anything that isnt spammy should be just fine.

I” d say warlock.

Cool phantasy, always has 1 top dps spec.

Brings utility.

Easy enough to play

Looks amazing

Another thing that might help is a great addon called Hekili.
Is recommends what abilities to use based on the rotation priority of the class for PvE situations.
I found it very useful for helping keep more of my brain focused on raid mechanics and less on an ever-increasing ability rotation complexity.
It covers all the damage and tank specs. I do not know if he expanded on healer damage rotations too now.

Without it I do not think I would have the courage to jump between the 13 classes

Demonlogy Warlock …

Beastmaster Hunter is probably the best class spec to play for this. It has a core rotation of just 4 buttons, with an extra button for AoE. Also there are a few good tricks Hunters can do for more advanced play.

Another I would try is Fire Mage. It’s quite simple and straightforward (spam fireball until you get a crit, then hit fire blast (always crits) and then instant cast pyroblast or flamestrike, and then repeat), but highly effective.

Also when choosing your talents maybe try go for the slightly easier options. You can reduce complexity by picking more passive talents, and while you often lose a bit of dps, playing well with passives will do better than picking active abilities and using them badly.

Best of luck.
