so I’m becoming a bit desperate at this point honestly…
When playing WOW Retail, my GPU starts to make a grinding sound. I tried to change every setting in the game but the only one that stops it is putting the game in window mode.
I thought it was my GPU that was getting old, so I got myself an entire new pc, but… same issue!
I set everything on minimum again, but only solution = window mode… For the love of me I cannot understand what it causing it…
I cant tell you the exact reasons for this experience you are having. But the word you are looking for is Coil Whine. Its a VERY common thing for GPU’s to produce a Whining sound, unless you happen to get lucky with your card.
It does not damage the card in any way shape or form, its simply just electricity making some noise when passing through capacitors.
Dealing with the noise is a whole other thing, but if you can live with it, do not be worried that it will do any damage, other than driving you nuts
Sounds like you are running the game with uncapped FPS.
Enable Vsync / freesync and/or set a FPS limit ingame or with an external tool.
Set the limit to your monitors refreshrate, e.g. 144Hz (FPS).
thank you for the info! Just read up on coil whine and indeed seems like its almost same sound. I was indeed thinking the sound could damage my gpu so I avoided it all costs.
Coilwhine is common and it’s the devils work for sure.
If you have dual bios on your GPU, there should be a switch on the GPU where you can set it to either OC or SILENT. Try the silent one, it reduces some clockspeeds and such. In trade it could solve your coilwhine issues.
