I have an AMD Raden 7800 XT GPU and when im running old content whether its open world or instances the gpu reaches 250W in power usage, the hotspot temperature reaches 110 C and my PC shutsdown. The issue isnt present in areas like Dornogal or Khaz Algar in general. I recently also finished Black Myth Wukong which is a more graphicly demanding game (i assume) with near 0 issues. In WOW i play in DX12, 2K res, no RT, graphics quality preset at level 8, FPS cap at 163, no VSync, all compatibility settings enabled. Is this an issue on my part? Why do old zones strain my gpu more than newer, more detailed ones?
It’s probably one of the many dx12 problems at the moment (a full month has already passed btw). A lot of players tend to agree that dx11 seems to solve most if not all of the issues but no one is too happy with the loss in performance.
That is not a game related issue but a cooling issue on your end.
Might need to repaste the GPU or check if the fans are working.
A GPU should never get that hot, they are made to run at 100% load with temps usually in the 80s or lower.
You will be mostly CPU limited in current content so the GPU won’t max out on load.
In old content the CPU won’t bottleneck as much and you will reach high FPS easily.
Btw, check if you have the render scale set to 100% and nothing else. This feature has been buggy for almost a year now.
DX12 is not magically gonna overheat your GPU if your cooling is fine
It won’t but it has caused me a handful of blue screens, all of which have coincidentally started with the launch of the patch. Before that day I had no problems whatsoever.
As for old zones straining hardware much more than expected, that problem quickly went away for me just as new ones only started emerging, while they were still “trying” to fix stuff.
Nothing has changed over the last two weeks probably because the PTR is now receiving their full attention, but unfortunately as of yesterday I haven’t noticed any improvement after a short session.
Out of 10 different problems I’ve read about on the forum, many of which I am not experiencing myself, users have unanimously agreed that dx12 appears to be the root of all issues.
as i said i have run more demanding games with no problem. i know the issue lies with wow and i will explain how. i have set an fps cap at 163 and when wow is running on the background the fps are capped to 30. now for example when i go to tanaan jungle or most old zones the gpu goes crazy. when i hit alt tab it instantly calms down and when i tab back in its like an airplane is about to take off. for some reason their render pipeline overstresses the gpu for absolutely no reason. the game doesnt have way too detailed graphics compared to games like call of duty or black myth wukong so it doesnt make sense. i think you are right about the cpu thing in dornogal
Games generally use much as they can. You mentioned hotspot being 110C, what is the difference between hotspot and general GPU temperature? Many 7000-series cards had issues with the thermal paste getting pushed out sooner or later causing hotspot temperatures to rise to the thermal cap while rest of the GPU was lot cooler.
Also, don’t forget it is summer so depending where you are ambient temperature might be higher than usual.
Personally I don’t have any issues though I am running 9070XT. Got following temps while running everbloom. 4k resolution, uncapped frames (seemed to be around 180-220 fps most of the time).
- Hotspot 83C
- GPU temp 61C
- Memory Temp 88C (these in general run hot on most, especially early 9070XT cards)
