GPU Power Draw

Hello!

Anyone else noticed their GPU power draw and fans go absolutely nuts during some content in Legion Remix? I have an RTX5080 and my GPU fans are almost silent when playing WoW Retail and even games like Battlefield 6 on 4K /w ultra settings. However I have noticed that during some content in Legion Remix they go absolutely nuts and sound like my computer is about to take off from the desk.

When this happens my GPU power draw goes through the roof (300w+) and my fans have to spin up like crazy to deal with the heat. This happens most notably in the Xavius fight and the Broken Shore scenario. Legion Remix is the only game this is happening in, so I am sure this is probably a Blizz issue. They need to look in to this ASAP if so!

Old things like Xavius fight are not designed for current high-end GPU’s. It’s the fog/mist effect that is causing it. My good ol’ GTX 1070 is fine.

More likely it’s your PSU fan which you don’t usually hear because the draw isn’t enough to make the fans kick in properly.

I have checked my fan and temperature monitors in realtime when this is happening - it’s 100% the GPU fans spinning up to deal with the associated power draw from the GPU :frowning:

Can still be the PSU fan making the extreme noise. Most PSU fans are really loud when they start to draw over 60% of their capacity but most people never experience that.

Mine did the same with a 5070ti when the GPU went over 300w draw. I replaced the PSU and got a be quiet Pure Power 13 M instead and the noise was gone.

It’s not though as I can see it’s the GPU fans spiking up to 100%

What’s causing the noise isn’t the main issue anyway. The issue is why does certain content in Legion cause a 2x increase in power draw from my GPU. I just did an AV on retail and even in the thick of a huge battle it never went above 150w. LFR Xavius was averaging around 300w, which is obviously causing a lot more heat and the GPU fans are spinning up to deal with it.

I’m going to just cap my GPU power % on Remix for now to deal with it, but it isn’t an ideal solution.

I’m not trying to say it’s not the GPU fans, certainly could be, but them going high still doesn’t mean they are what is causing most of the noise. Just that when I was having a noise issue everything pointed to the GPU but it wasn’t in the end. Just throw the GPU fans up to 100% at desktop and see if it’s the same level of noise if you care about confirming whether or not the PSU fan is also a noise factor.

But, yeh, I know your main concern is about why certain areas of the game are extremely demanding for no good reason. Probably just out of date code which a doubt they are going to rework now.

It is the GPU, I have it too. Only correcting OP tho, even retail is affected. Manaforge Omega raid has two rooms where my GPU basically turns into a starting Boeing 737. All other content in retail my GPU is at 20-40% performance and fans idle not doing a single rotation…

And yes, can confirm Xavius mists effects are a total killer.

Try setting foreground fps to 20 when on a boss that causes problems.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to try limtiing power % in nVidia and seeing how that goes.

RTX 3060 here and my GPU never goes above 10% load.
I have noticed a lot of micro-freezes, both in Lemix and Retail.

Just did Xavius on Remix with power threshold set at 80% in the Nvidia app. Power draw and fan noise was well down with no perceivable impact on FPS. Will keep doing this in future.

Going to test the Xavius fight on retail later to confirm if the issue is specific to Remix. Should help put the ‘old fog graphics’ theory to the test.

Yeah that one and Elisande. I don’t regret me upgrading my rig but damn WoW is so badly optimised that apart from fps increase I can barely tell the difference. But hey, as it looks nowadays small companies like Microsoft can get away with breaking systems with updates. That’s pretty much the norm for them.

Try turning optional gpu functions off. Its at the buttom of the graphics settings

Exactly that. Same is happening to my 4080 as well.

4090 literally fights hard with Xavius
