Since the prepatch went live i’ve had an issue whereby when I’m playing every 5 mins or so they whole game freezes for about 2/3 seconds. Then the game minimizes and I go back to my home screen for a second. Then the game open again whited out for a few seconds. Then the game returns to normal. It’s really bumming me out.
So far i’ve tried:
-
Run the repair tool
-
Made sure the graphics settings are using my 2070 GPU and not “default”
-
Tried running it on both DX11 and DX12
-
A full reinstall
-
Updated all my graphics drivers to the latest version
-
Disabled all add ons for a while to see if that help
-
Closing all other applications
I have a 2070 Super GPU and a 3700x CPU while playing in 1440p.
I tried opening my task manager and keeping it open on the second screen to watch what happens and I noticed a few things. Firstly the CPU is fine and always well below 100%.
However the GPU spends most of the time at close to 0% (while the game is running) and then when the crash happens it jumps to 100% and then back to close to 0% again. I’m guessing this may be related to the problem but i’ve never had any problems with WOW at 10/10 graphics settings (even the day before the patch).
Anyone got any ideas?
Do you use razer synapse or ICUE? try using the reliability monitor (Win10) and see what is causing the error? i have a very similar issue but my game locks up and crashes to desktop
Just tried uninstalling ICUE and it didn’t work.
Watching the “GPU engine” it says other apps are running on GPU 0 - 3D and WOW is running on GPU 0 - Copy. Not sure what that means though.
did the reliability monitor shed any light on the situation?
I’ve got one of these:
Description
A problem with your hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.
I don’t really understand what any of the stuff underneath means:

Actually having very similar problems with AMD. Thou non of these problem are directly related. The issues that started to happen during Argus are back. GPU hangs causing my kernel to produce GPU fault detected: 147 which sometimes indicating overclock/unstable clocks on gpu. But thats not the issue here. Game an just fine before prepatch.
Thou using linux + wine-staging + dxvk 1.7 + amdgpu. Crashing usually happens @ argus certain spots. And or places where are many ppl. Indicating there might be some rendering issues that gpu cannot handle due bugs.
Not sure if related but I had issues with wow changing my advanced settings to DX 12 so changed it back to DX 11 and now no more problems.
That was on my Win 7 PC though on my Win 10 laptop no problems.
Hi, I have had the exact same issue.
I have a Ryzen 3900X and a Nvidia RTX 2080S. Had no issues at all with any other games, and my rig is about a year old.
It so depressing
was really excited for pre-patch, but have barely played because any time I get into a fight my game freezes, tabs out, then tabs back in with an invisible cursor.
Please let me know if you find a solution for this,I have tried everything other than replacing hardware, which I am not willing to do since literally every other game I own works perfectly fine.
This is like WoW engine restarting after some non fatal crash (or settings change).
- Do you have any overlay active (like nvidia one or other)? - sometimes WoW just keeps crashing and restarting under such overlay
- Run “latencymon”, run game, make it bug out as described and alt-tab to the latencymon and check if it’s reporting problems (sometimes Nvidia driver can conflict with audio driver or alike and needs cleaning and reinstalling).
- In the end looking into Windows logs / (WoW app logs) maybe could reveal something.
I’m having exactly same problem! 2-3 sec freeze, game tab and comes back. Sometimes I Can play for hours without any problem and sometimes some of this in few minutes. My gpu is rtx 1070. Plz if you find any solution post it!
I’ve been having this problem also for about 2 months,
I seem to have fixed it yesterday after updating windows 10 to the latest version.
Type winver into the search bar on windows, if you are running anything other than Version 2004 or Version 20H2 then download + run the windows 10 update assistant fromt the microsoft website.
Did anyone fix this? I’m still getting the issue and my windows is up to date.
Did you checked with latencymon?
It ran and said something like “your computer appears to be suitable for handling real-time audio and other tasks”? This was throughout the whole process of it crashing on me. It does say there were 10,000 total hard pagefault’s though. Not sure what that means.
So it’s not drivers. We are left with:
- is the SSD getting close to full?
- are the CPU/GPU temps ok? (no throttling?)
- do you have some windows app running in the background? wallpaper auto-switcher or alike?
Hey thanks for the help!
It actually turned out to the overclocking on the GPU that caused the issue. I’ve knocked it back a bit and it’s fine now no issues at all. I don’t understand enough about the hardware of software to know why this cause a problem in just one game though. Must have been some kind of engine change with SL pre-patch.
Cheers
how did you do it? i’d like to try to find if it works for me too, thx!
Hey mate.
Use the software called MSI Afterburner. Turn down clock speed just a touch and keep trying. Hopefully it’ll solve the issue for you.
Lowering the clock speeds won’t cause any issues but if you decide to overclock it again watch a YT guide on it (don’t worry its also really easy but you just don’t want to over do it or it’ll cause the issue WOW has on everything). There’s no danger to your PC you can just reset to default as well after.
Done, and the problem solved! FINALLY!!! thx a lot!!!
