GPU temp question?

Hey guys, I have a question regarding my GPU… I have MSI gtx 1060 6gb and I’ve been monitoring the temp while playing WoW on max settings and AA and noticed that my GPU goes to 82 degrees… I was wondering is that a safe temp and should I be worried? Everything else in my pc stays cool even if I play for hours (50-54degrees). My CPU is i5-8600k.

GPUs are designed to run hot, and 82 degrees should be fine. I set my fan speed curve to keep mine under 90 degrees. Double-check the NVidia website if you want to be certain.

82 degrees under full load is normal.

It’s completely fine, although its a bit high (but fine really) how is the airflow in your case?

Did you update your drivers?
Did you meddle with gpu settings in any way?

How old is your computer? Is it brand new or is it old and this problem occured recently?

Who put together your PC?

Update your Windows

Set an aggressive fan curve or manually turn up the speed with MSI afterburner. Also what fps are you running at?

GPUs on average use the most power in a PC (unless you have a massive Xeon or Threadripper as your CPU) and thus make a lot of heat. When I was using R9 Fury it did got hot and hit high on the fans in some parts of WoW. If it would get to hot it would throttle to limit heat generated so it will stay safe. With current water cooling I have there is way more thermal inertia and the GPU temp/cooling is way less spiky, although it will make some heat over time if you play a lot

I believe the airflow its fine…
Thats the case I have: cooler master masterbox lite 5 mid-tower gaming case

Also, my Drivers are up to date, I didn’t touch my GPU settings at all. The computer is 1 year old and my windows is up ot date aswell… I’m running WoW on 75-80 fps

To be honest above 90 is where it starts to have a bad impact on your computer.

82 is normal on full load though. Is 82 the highest or avarage? If its the highest, you’re good. If its avarage, I’d recommend keeping it between 70-80.

You can try to achieve this by cleaning your fans from dust, or maybe refreshing the thermal paste if you havent done it in a while.

You can also try to lower your settings just a little bit and limit your fps so your computers doesnt have to work on full load.

For example, I’m having around 82 avarage and 88 max heat while playing csgo which I find bad, because computer keep getting around 200 fps. I limited the fps and found it better, lower heat.

Hope this helps.

While it’s fine, the Pascal gpu silicon throttles after 60, so you get downclocks and lower boost speeds.

The temp threshold of the gpu is usually 105 before a thermal shutdown would occur but that still wouldn’t damage the gpu it’s a preventative measure.

A little update: yesterday I’ve noticed that my Vertical Sync was disabled (not sure why I disabled it…) so I decided to switch it on again. I’m still monitoring but yesterday after 3 hours of playing my GPU never reached more than 75 degrees…

Yeah, no point running above 60fps if your monitor can only display 60fps!

I seriously didn’t think that vertical sync have sucha major impact on my GPU temp… I mean my GPU runs 6-7 degrees cooler atm… I haven’t reached max lvl on this char yet (I was gone for a while) so I wanna see how it will perform on max lvl in a raid or epic bg for example.

Nah its a bit high tbh, I think you should maybe dust the system, or re apply thermal paste or so, maybe check if fans are broken

Most MSI Nvidia GPU fans don’t even start running until 60 degrees, most list as safe max temp at 100 degrees, if you want some control over it and make it run at a lower temp, instal MSI Afterburner which as an option to change fans speeds for any temp you want. Don’t bother with any of the overclocking features just set up custom fan speeds, it’s super easy do do, it’s a temp/speed Graph with movable pins you set with your cursor, then set Afterburner to start on Windows boot and forget about it. there is also an option to show temps on your toolbar and even an overlay system to show anything in a panel in game.

I have run it for years. I set mine so my fans run at 10% fan speed at like 40 degrees and are at max at 80 and my GPU in game on medium /high settings never goes above 50/60 degrees .

Heat is the biggest killer of GPU’s in fact everything in your PC can be affected by heat, running too hot can cause the solder on components to harden, go brittle and eventually crack causing a break in circuits. But most electrical components can run more efficient and better if they are warm/hot but too hot can be bad.

As for in Raid a lot of people turn their Graphics way down in ‘raid settings’ having high settings in a raid environment can just end up with too many effects on screen, sometimes seeing less is far better especially in a raid environment were the priority is to see mechanic effects and things to dodge etc.
As long as you have ‘Projected Textures’ and ‘Particle Density’ turned on you will see all the 'important ’ stuff.

How should I set the power limit and temp limit? I havent touched the fan speed yet but I set my temp limit to 70 and my power limit 70%… been playing WoW for 2 hours alrdy (haven’t touched the settings - still on ultra) and my GPU temp is 65-66 degrees… I mean I’m a bit confused - I’ve just reduced my GPU power but I’m still able to play on the same settings but with even lower temp… how is this possible?

You’re worrying far too much.

It will throttle if it gets too hot - at which point you’ll notice the performance drop and be able to take action. If it’s not throttling, find something else to fret about

Personally I wouldn’t have touched power or temp limits, all you’ve done is lowered the amount of power the GPU will use before it throttles back.

I would leave those alone at what they was by default and just set the fan speed up in the ‘settings’ > ‘fan’ tab, tick the box to ‘set the user defined automatic fan control’ and set it to start at a lower temp, and be at max around 80 and you will still see a lot lower running temps but your GPU will have its full power available. To change fan speeds just click the pins on the fan speed graph and drag them around to the speed/temp you want.

Like I said before MSI Nvidia cards fans usually don’t start until 60 degrees so up to that point there just passively cooling, hence setting the fans to start at a lower temp will result in a cooler running Card
