Ground/Flying mount changes YOU would like to see

Lovely fellow forumers,

The mount system we see now in retail is imho not ideal and I’d love to hear what possible solutions or QoL things regarding mounts you’d like to see going forward as there is little use for ground mounts - even more so in Dragonflight.

1) I think I’ve seen this idea before, but one solution could be that the game would automatically switch to your favorite ground mount in locations where you’re unable to fly and vice versa (I’d make it a togglable option just in case). It’s not perfect if you favorited many mounts, maybe there could be lists you could switch between.

2) I’d like to see an improvement to the Summon Random Favorite Mount spell. At the moment, the spell will summon any mount usable in the location and you can’t toggle it to flying mounts only, ergo its usability is pretty niche.

In Master Erevien’s words, Cheerios! :bowl_with_spoon:

yeah I’d like maybe a “programmable” button where it summons either a ground mount that I have specified or a flying mount I’ve specified depending on if I can fly there, but going into Dragonflight both of those seem irrelevant anyways, which is kinda sad given how many cool mounts we have (though dragon riding is 100% better than TBC flying).
After years of running it I only very recently got Ashes of A’lar, so, kinda bumbed I won’t have much use for it in Dragonflight lol.

I think they’re probably going to have to find a way to get old mounts working with Dragon Riding’s system, regardless of if that mount can use those animations.
I’m an edgy guy, I love my Death Knights, so my undead horses are my favourite mounts, and I’d love it if they could all fly, but idk how they’d do a horse with dragon riding
(invincible with it’s wings could totally work though)

Yeah, everyone will be riding dragons in DF zones, but outside of them it’ll be still relevant imo. I’m also curious what happens post DF.

I’d personally like dragon riding-like system for other mounts, but I’ve noticed it’s a pretty controversial topic. Some people also pointed out the DF zones are specifically made for it and other zones feel small with dragon riding and such.

Yeah other zones do feel smaller with it, but imo that doesn’t really matter anyways, until they add content to those zones that we’ll be actively present for, who cares if it’s faster to get across?

Though, I do think they could address that in some kind of world revamp if they ever do one, by making all those continents bigger, while still keeping the same scale for the zones compared to eachother.
Right now, especially compared to the dragon isles, the eastern kingdoms etc are really small, they used to feel massive, but with how fast we travel and how frequently we teleport about, it all feels really really small considering they’re supposed to be whole countries.
tbh, this could be the very reason they’re holding off on doing the Gilneas resettlement etc.

A lot of the devs who are making the game now weren’t working on it back in cataclysm, so dare I say it? maybe they’re building up to a whole world revamp that’s easier for them to update certain parts at different times.
We’ve already seen an increasing number of zones have multiple stand alone updates, the tech is there, so maybe they are working towards that.

I do realize I’m full of the ol’ hopium, I’m not expecting any of this, but it would be cool as hell

No, I’m on this with you, world revamp might be my biggest wish… but that’s quite a project, right?

I’m tired of the new islands all the time though, I know they claimed going back to WoW’s roots with Dragon Isles and yeah right kinda, but it’s still more of a marketing talk and quick cash because… dragons.

I can’t imagine going like this forever without some revamping and revisiting of the original continents.

I would like to see a completely new mount system, though I have a feeling that most people would hate it.

I would love to see a mount level system and mount families added, similar to the battlepets.
Both for flying and ground mounts.

First all flying mounts would have to have the dragon flight mechanics, and within your flying mounts would have families like

Examples.
Dragons: basicly being like what we have seen in dragonflight.
Gryphons: sharper turning, more acrobatic / agile. Flap - Gain speed and altitude.
magical: (flying carpets, discs and books) Has a manabar for flying, blink abillity to gain altitude.
Mechs: nitro boosts for extreeme speeds for a short while, hover (for a short time)

So on and so forth, then for your character you could level up your riding skill with certain families to make you better at your favorite mounts.

Same thing I think ground mounts should have, families and different abillities.
Horses: Kick, can deliver a powerful kick knocking enemies back a short distance if target is behind you.
Wolves: Savage charge, charges towards a target. 30 yard range.
cats: short prowl, mounted stealth, while stealthed only move 60% mountspeed.
Raptors: raptor jump, long jumps

I think all this would be really cool then for me, I would also love that your racial mounts gave you slight bonuses. as if you are a blood elf and ride a hawkstrider you leveld 10 or maybe 15% faster in your strider abillities, and maybe had like a 3% speed increase in your racial mount speed. Something nice but not so if you were a night elf and didnt ride a cat you feel disadvantaged.

I also would like to see small racing events, both for ground and for flying.
vanilla thousand needles salt plains kinda thing, for cosmetic rewards and just fun little mini games.

You also have the Argent tournament mechanics you could re use, have lancing events and other tournies around the world. a small pvp aspect to it.

That way people could work up their mounts, get more attached to them and movement would have a bit of gameplay too it.

I think that would be fun.
Wish ya all a great day.

Yeah, I wanna see if the crossroads has developed into a small town, if characters like Mankrik are still alive etc.

They can’t keep giving us content islands, same as they can’t keep throwing out new raids and dungeons, while all the old stuff stays irrelevant but still taking up space in the game.
Season 4 shows they wanna make old raids/dungeons relevant for endgame, maybe they’ll do the same for old zones.

The company absolutely deserves criticism for how the games’ been since Legion, but I do almost think that BFA and SL have been a case of “we need to redesign core fundamental systems and tech for the long term health of the game, let’s just throw whatever we can out there while we do that”.
It is an 18 year old game, it came out when I was literally 3/4 years old, and people just keep saying “just go to a new engine”, maybe these past few years they’ve been building the tech they need to do a massive upgrade to the overall game?

Like if you look at Vanilla, no one would ever have thought something like Dragon Riding, or Evoker was ever possible.

Actually… that could be cool as hell, like something as in depth as dragon riding but for different types of mounts?
like, damn, dude, idk if this is an idea from a different game or something but I think this might actually be one of the coolest ideas I’ve seen in regards to mounts??
it’d certainly add reasons to use ground mounts, currently there aren’t any at all if you’ve unlocked flying everywhere

There are alot of mounts that should be able to fly but can’t.
Some flying mounts that has legs should be able to use them while not flying instead of hovering.
Personally i’d like to see the fallen charger as a flying mount, i love that one.

You can do that with a macro now.

Thanks for you contribution, Thalerin. I think it’s a really interesting idea and basically to sum it up you would like to give mounts more depth, which is great. It would also make people switch to maybe lesser used mounts for certain activities. There’s not much like that atm, maybe the flying golem for gathering and that’s it.

Racing events are something we’re gonna see in DF I think. I think it’s great as most world content is a snoozefest, esp. for younger people I can imagine.

ah cool cheers!

yeah we are, there’s even multiplayer dragon riding races and different levels of solo races, and I believe some of them may be something you can do to level up some reputations.

Well, if I were the big boss at made the calls for WoW, I would try to make it very deep, but I don’t think it needs to be super deep.
But it would give us alot of casual content, as for my self is not much of a raider or mythic player, I like questing, story, brawlers guild and casual pvp.
But I do think adding mount families could be really fun and have alot of creative ideas.

Lets say you take and make “Rams” a family, all the goats and rams have their own skill,
I could see them have like a mountain climb abillity like a mountain goat where as you ran to a cliff and popped that skill your ram could do the mountain climbing minigame that has been added in DF, to climb sheer cliffs.

Kodos and such coud have a warstump while mounted to stun enemies around you for a short while.

Alot of fun things, in general I just want to see more minigames and small fun systems in game
And I think you could do alot with mounts

Sorry that I’m gonna highlight these two words, but that’s exactly what WoW is missing atm. I mean, not every creative idea is gonna work, I’ve seen a few on this board alone, but there needs to be a push for that for the game to stay relevant.

I think DF is promising in that regard and hopefully a building block for the future.

They’ve had creative ideas. DF is going back to a simpler time because that’s what people want… for now.

Rush to level cap… raid. That’s what the vocal minority want; that’s what they will have (probably.)

I think restrictions in the mount department might be a much needed thing. I think I have like… 300 something mounts, closer to 400 maybe? and on all my characters I choose a mount that I feel fits that character, On Thalerin I ride my dragonhawk from the Argent Tournie, and my crimson Hawkstrider. fits my mog and feel like a warcraft 3 blood elf.

On my nightborne I fly around on a flying carpet.
On my night elf I ride around on that giant tree.
my forsaken I ride the scourge WC3 promotional Catapult.

Maybe making the stable master guy a useable NPC again by having most of your mounts with him and on your adventure you could only bring with you 3 maybe 5 mounts?
and if you wanted to change that out you had to go and find a stable master and switch them out.
Sometimes less is more

When rogues give up vanish.

I try to not spoil myself too much so mainly I was thinking of the Evoker class mechanics and dragon riding (however kinda sorta copied from GW2 but whatever)… I’ve also heard there should be more incentive to wpvp, which I love, how it all pans out I’m curious to see.

Deal  in ten letters

I certainly wouldn’t be against this, dragon riding is already showing how traversal can make or break minute to minute gameplay in the world, and now I really want this, a huge fundamental change, but one that would ultimately feel far more engaging.

Yes, you’ll be able to gear up purely through world pvp if you want to, enemies drop currency and you can buy gear with that currency, super straight forward, I’m really excited for it

Movement and travle is gameplay, If you have ever played any spiderman game, Prototype or infamous games… even some of the assassin creed games you fast notice that movement and traveling through the world is gameplay.
I always thought the best thing about spiderman games were just swining around New York and stopping petty criminals, the bigger quests and fights I could take it or leave it. Movement were always my favorit parts.

I would love to be a part of the greater world again. to make mounts, both flying and ground better again I would also… remove all portals from the games … all this portal hopping kills the immersion and the world for me. But I know many people love theese portals and like the coviniance with them… sooo maybe have servers with portals and some without. and ofcourse, mages could go back to selling their portals  hehe
