That’s a little different though. I picked herbalism for the purpose of selling herbs for gold. I didn’t choose a mage for the purpose of fleecing gold from other players. 
Also I think it’s just a nice thing to do when somebody asks me for a portal to not charge them for it. 
Yeah that is cool you can at least use these spells, but whisper spammed by “portal pleasers” won’t be cool experience 
Has always been more of a case of making them for people if i felt like it. Some would trade a bit of gold for it while most would simply say thanks for helping.
The only time i’ve ever seen people actively selling portals was back in TBC when gold wasn’t as plentiful and some wanted to get their flight speeds.

Personally, with so many portal items we have right now (rings and whatnot, also it pays off being an engineer with wormholes) I think only a few, really desperate people will resort to buying portals, or new players.
The law of scarcity would dictate that if mages aren’t selling portals for 100g then the cost of portals will increase.
So a time limited player might pay 1,000g or 5,000g for a portal if that is what it takes to save time.
You’d have to make some serious AH gold for that to be worth 10 - 15 min of traveling ingame. Scarcity mainly applies to things that can’t be gotten through other means, while lacking portals can be worked around by traveling for a short amount of time.
what portals will you be able to provide that wont be in the portal rooms? stonard? (horde only). theramore? the ones being removed were not available to mages?
i may be wrong on one portal though. the dala crater i know mages can teleport to, but can they create portals too? am not sure as i still haven’t picked that up on my mage. but still, that would be one portal with twilight highlands, arathi warfront (when up), UC/SMC (horde), the hinterlands (druid), EPL (palas) and even flying from SWP being other options.
you dont have kara portal, and you dont have CoT portal. mages wont be needed as much as some think because of the portal disaster.

I never charge for a portal but if I’m busy I say so and if they get pissy…well they can go f off.
