Guide for Writing Good Combat RP

Unrelated to combat RP itself, but based opinion incoming: I think instead of roll fights people should play rock paper scissors to determine if a hit connects or who wins.

Rolling is completely out of your hands. While rock paper scissors is to some extent the same thing, you can at least play mind games with your opponent. Let’s say we’re deciding who wins and twice in a row we both pick paper. You might think “Invader is an idiot who’ll pick paper again, I’ll pick scissors!” but then I perform a mind game on you because I knew you going to try to outsmart me, so I pick rock because I knew you would pick scissors thinking I was stupid enough to pick paper a third time. But then you could stay with paper, and beat my rock because ultimately I mind gamed myself.

How’s that for woke?

Out of curiosity, why would that be a bad thing? I mean, it’s not like people RP to get depressed and bored, amusement is a good thing as long as yours doesn’t override that of other players / breaks the lore.

Ah, finally. A question! Ahem-

What I said above boils down to personal preference. As a role-player and someone that actively participates in writing activities, I’m eager to explore all aspects of a character or situation, even if the narrative itself turns somewhat edgy or the character goes through a natural depressive or angsty phase, as it’s a relatively natural thing to go through. Though getting back to the original question;

For the majority of my characters, the role-play is entirely story focused and geared towards pushing that character’s narrative and development, so I won’t engage in randomness for my -own- amusement unless it is entirely unexpected and likely not as a result of my own actions.

There are times when I’m reading a book, playing a game or watching a movie wherein a character will go through a range of motions. I cannot influence these, as an observer. As a role-player, I have direct control over my character, and I prefer to have their actions motivated by what they’re thinking/feeling over what I’m thinking/feeling for the sake of immersion.

I do have a few characters, like Mion, who function for the sole purpose of my own bemusement and take on the role of not so subtle self-inserts that better suit my own needs/agenda, when and if I am in the mood, of course.

As for characters I have actual story/narrative investment in, I gain a sense of enjoyment out of keeping to that investment and narrative while putting any personal wants or interests aside. I won’t sabotage it to get a few quick jollies.

I hope that answered your question!

Thank you, Mion! I understand your point! :v:

I have no clue what Jojos is, but if it’s anime like I suspect, hell no I didn’t.

It is an anime. You might like it, it’s very bizarre though. Youtube for rock paper scissors jojo to see what I mean.

Best RP fight of all time;

Actually very fitting for the Stormwind RP scene, imo.

finds an old spidertank on a battlefield where the horde was victorious
I have an idea!
salvages the mini-gun the tank is equipped with as it to big for gnomes, slightly to heavy for humans but perfectly for orcs and tauren.
This… this is great!
At his hut he managed to restore the salvaged weapon into an easy to use and carry mini-gun for himself and to that extend the horde

And so, this is How the Horde fractured into two smaller, gun wielding factions, The Bloods and The Crips. the factions also fought the Alliance by driving past them on their new mechanical steeds and firing upon their homes. They called them “drive bys”.

Just throwing my two cents here as well.

No, don’t pick them up; they’re blighted.

I said don’t.

Banter aside, I would also like to add that, by following your format, T1 and T2 aren’t mutually exclusive. If you know what you’re doing in terms of writing, you can mix these two. Quality over quantity is a good thing, but it doesn’t mean you CANNOT ABSOLUTELY go over one paragraph of text if you’re in a RP fight.

Not saying you are going to write five or six paragraphs of emotes, I used to do that and although I’m a quick typer, I am aware it’s not fun for others to wait too much.

Again, if you know what you’re doing, however, you can manage to write a detailed (even interesting) post without all the so-called “purple prose” everyone seems to love so very much around these parts. If you pay attention and try to practice it a little bit, you’ll soon realize you can write stuff under a paragraph that is worth someone else’s five during combat, or generally during ANY RP.

But feel free to correct me, I like this sort of discussions.

Hear, hear.

I wish we could apply this as a general rule of thumb at all times. It would be so much more enjoyable.
