[H-RP]: The Umbrage Academy đź“– [[DISCONTINUED]]

Magic has served as a cornerstone to most every society to ever form on Azeroth, for millenia. It has taken many forms, has been guided by many hands and has shaped the outcome of a hundred thousand events, a hundred thousand battles. A hundred thousand lives.

Yet, only some forms of it remain welcomed within the modern age. The Light carries upon it’s shoulders the faith of thousands of individuals, and answers many a prayer for the faithful in dire straits. Nature has been a part of Azeroth since the beginning, and those who have developed any control with it have been a blessing to their circle, their people, and are turned to for guidance. Finally, the Arcane. The regimented magic that has taken the world itself by storm for hundreds of years, and a long string of success and splendor left in it’s wake.

But these are not the only form of magic available to us. These are just the three that society has welcomed, whilst outcasting the others. Shadow and Void, Fel, Blood magic or ancient curses, even the study of Souls and of Death, that awaits all of us in time. All of these have fallen to the wayside. Even despite a religious following of the Forgotten Shadow, it is rare to find any living, breathing individual who is truly fond of the Shadow. It is high time this hostile perception changed.

Guild Info:
The Umbrage Academy (Umbrage Decorum in-game) is a new organisation dedicated to the education of both the masses, and the students who will eventually become the next generation of spellcasters. Founded and funded by Tenebrae Wiskerville and Gwylathiel Emberborn, two individuals formerly of a Cult background and masters in their own right, they seek to bring forth a means of reintegrating these wayward magics back into the fold and into society.

Understanding, Controlling, Harnessing and Developing their paths will only enable greater things to come from each student, and to allow each to benefit the society of Azeroth as a whole. Even in these misrepresented paths, there is Excellence to be found within Anathema.

Using the map provided on this Pinned post you’ll be able to see that we’ve planned to use Ravenholdt in Hillsbrad as a location of choice as the building itself and it’s surrounding landscape provides us with a lot of our needs. We are aware of the Syndicate NPCs present, however we are using this building/location for it’s likeness and aren’t planning on being flatmates with the Syndicate. (If you are based here already, please contact me and let me know!)

What are we looking for?
Primarily, people who are looking for this kind of roleplay! We’re actively open to characters willing to learn as students, and characters willing to teach them as instructors. Naturally, we do need to process instructor applications (as we don’t want a scenario where we have 20 teachers and only 4 students!). We’re also looking for, potentially, other guilds who might like to form an agreement with ourselves, enabling events between the two (we can teach your guild how to handle certain BBEG’s, for instance!)

What are we not looking for?
We’re not looking for people are just out to cause drama or can’t bring themselves to the roleplay we can provide. In an ideal scenario, regardless of where your character is on the scale between “complete novice” and “pro spellcaster”, there is still something to learn, fundamentals to improve, etc. And characters should expect to be students for some time until a curriculum is completed. You can’t ace your studies in a week and then call it quits.

We also note that in certain scenarios, we are welcoming of some headcanon. Some lore around these topics isn’t concrete or has been retconned numerous times in the past. As such we may look to fill this gap with something that makes more sense and could bring out a higher quality of roleplay. However this does not mean we are willing to graciously accept your character who is multi-universal and can go Ultra Instinct. Keep things within reason. Powerful characters still need to be roleplayed correctly.

Rank Structure:
Unlike in many guilds, where ranks can be regularly climbed or promoted to individuals, this does focus more on roles you would expect to find within an educational institution. Many are self explanatory, but please see the below.

Headmaster - The two founding members of the Academy reside as it’s headmasters. Each is capable of the other Staff-tasks or roles below, however their focus is primarily on running the Academy, handling PR and ensuring that the students of their academy are afforded the right tools in order to succeed.

Administration - The Administration staff are the team behind handling finances, suppliers, organising students and conducting interviews where required. These are staff members who do not teach directly, but are directly tied to the economical and business success of the Academy.

Instructor - A more self-explanatory role amongst the staff.

Student (and Prefect) - The student rank is provided to any budding or willing individual who wishes to learn within the Academy, and will be allocated an Instructor based on their own individual interests (if you wish to learn Fel, then you’ll be allocated to a corresponding instructor who teaches Fel).

Prefect students are those who are currently excelling in their studies and can be considered a beacon for other students to turn to, those who can act as their voice or guide them in their lessons. This role is also to assist in promoting student-to-student roleplay.

OOC/Alt - This should be very self-explanatory. Reserved for any member of the guild who has not yet enrolled in the Academy on an IC basis, or for the alts of any pre-existing member who just wants to “have a guild” for them.

FAQs

  • What Instructor vacancies are available? (This will be updated whenever there is a change!)

Currently, we are NOT looking for Instructors to the following: Shadow, Fel (Caster & Illidari).
We are currently open to Instructors wishing to teach the following (note, we cannot take students for these until we have an Instructor): Necromancy/Soul Magic, Void, Blood Magic.

This isn’t to say that because we aren’t looking for certain instructors that you cannot apply. We’re happy to keep applications and should an opening come along, we can look over those applications and reach out to you! Furthermore, it is also possible for characters in the Academy to make the transition from Student to Instructor and avenues for this are available.

  • What races do you accept?

We accept all races of the Horde. Whilst we are a Horde-based guild, we are also willing to take Alliance into this project as well. As we are brand-new we would rather focus on primarily developing the guild on Horde-side, however we would be willing to launch on Alliance should the interest be there. Otherwise we’re happy to accept Alliance as individuals and keep them involved.

  • What classes do you accept?

We are open to accepting all classes as well, provided there is a reason for them joining. Understandably, for instance, Monks will likely not have anything to learn from us, as only other Monks can teach them. However if they were afflicted by something IC, or their power was from an unconventional means as opposed to Chi, we would be more willing to accept them for that (though we do ask that these concepts are kept reasonable).

  • What is your stance on Cross-Faction Roleplay?

As touched on in the Races we Accept section, we are more than happy to have Alliance players involved in this project. Notably, we aren’t entirely interested in RP-PVP or constant wars with Alliance guilds (or Horde guilds for that matter), but we’re more than open to the idea of having our boys in blue join in!

  • What is your stance on new players?

We’re happy to have them! So long as you’re willing to learn and have a grasp on the English language, we’re happy to have you! We’re more than willing to sit down and help with any lore questions, game questions, etc that you may have.

  • I’m currently in a guild, but am interested in this project. How would that affect things?

Naturally, our concern first and foremost is if your current GM is okay with you joining the project. Much like in real life, there are avenues for students to contribute when they can, but still prioritise their work elsewhere. We will NOT be poaching members from any other guild, nor asking them to shift focus away from their current guild. However for further details on this in particular, it may be best to get in contact with ourselves so we can discuss this with you personally.

  • Why pick this guild over others?

There are very few academy based guilds on Hordeside Argent Dawn. Those that are tend to focus on specific races (looking at Blood Elf Magisters here) or are legitimately just for the Arcane. Whilst these are perfectly fine guilds, the concept of trying to bring other magic schools and put them back on the map isn’t something we have observed on the Red side, at least.

  • What sort of events can I expect?

We’re planning to only have one, or maybe two structured and planned events a week. These will focus more on generalised lessons, varying from theory studying to a more practical demonstration and testing each other. This could also include events with other guilds provided they are interested in such.

Having said this, we are also looking to have a more freeform approach to the guild events, where students can contact their respective officer and have a one-to-one session for their character any day that is mutually convenient. Or group sessions if some students are at a similar level in the curriculum. We aim to encourage player autonomy in this manner.

It is probably worth mentioning that we’ll make an appearance at the upcoming Recruitment Faire on February 19th! ([H-RP]The Orgrimmar Recruitment Faire | February 19th).
If you’d like to interact with us and see what we’re like from an IC perspective, that’s a chance for you to do just that!

Thank you for the kind words though Dorien <3

And just to clarify, I will be making some IC posts for everyone, and answering any questions people may have on here also. It isn’t just strictly a thread for just OOC info/updates.

Howdy everyone!

Just wanted to make a quick update post to provide our stance on something and to hopefully answer a question that some of you may or may not have about the Academy.

Demon Hunters. Let’s talk about them.
Demon Hunters / Illidari presently don’t have much of a place right now. There are obviously guilds dedicated to them and to their eternal vigilance and the hunt they have , which is fantastic news. It’s fairly easy to interpret their goal of “deal with the demons” as being mostly checked off, atleast in the bulk of the Legion. There are some scattered here and there but for like 95% of the work, Illidari can basically retire.

Except, should they? I’ve been asked about Illidari and their position within the Academy, if we accept them, and well, why should they join. So here’s a brief insight as to some logic that could be applied for them seeking solace in the Academy, or to confirm for you guys that these spots do exist and we do, infact, want your Illidari characters with us.

With most of the Legion out of the way, all of the sacrifices and pain that each and every Illidari went through seem to be justified. The goal was met. But now, their every raison d’être has been called into question. What lies for them next? Sure, they could just pursue retirement, join some mercenary group or try some kind of social repentance, but none of these feel like particularly organic outcomes, nor do they feel like they would lend themselves to the character’s development.

The Academy does have an Illidari instructor (Hi, Valdrex!) and whilst they aren’t limited to guiding solely Illidari, it does allow for the Illidari to find a home in the Academy. It is less about instructing Illidari to improve (as naturally, you can’t become a full-fledged Illidari if you aren’t good enough - you will literally die). Rather, it is about taking the skillset that has been developed and allowing it to be further put to good use and to try and nurture it in the Academy’s vision (outlined in original post; restoring some prestige to these more taboo schools of magic and practices).

To summarise:

Illidari/DH’s are welcome in the Academy also! It’s not suggesting they’re bad and need to improve (because Illidari -have- to be good or they’d be dead in training). It’s moreso about enabling them to keep their skills sharp and work on redeeming themselves to society, who have been bitter towards them despite all the sacrifices made.

Lovely concept.
Maybe one day my gnome mage can swing by as a substitute teacher in her fields of expertise, but also attend a few lectures on subjects of interest
Best of luck with it all!

Thanks for going in depth on the Illidari situation, Fatalistic!

In short, the focus on our Illidari “students” will be less on learning how to use fel magic, and more on methods to stay in control of it. Demon hunters are a ticking time-bomb, and a demon hunter without purpose, arguably even more so.

The academy is a place where they can continue to hone their skills while waiting for the next big threat, all while staying in contact with the rest of society.

Naturally, this means there’s a place as well for characters that use fel magic in a way similar to Illidari, while not being one per se. Think a cursed warrior, felblade-esque characters for example, or those who simply wish to learn how to fight against such threats effectively.

Thanks for the support Sparkie! We’d love to have you swing by sometime. Maybe not for peasant magic like Arcane, but you’re of course welcome anytime

How about Void, then? Is that peasant magic too, or is it a cool magic?

Void is an acceptable answer. Less cool than Shadow, but acceptable!
