Half-Blood and "Exotic" Races in RP

Continuing on the amazing trend of vibrant discussion and wonderful use of polling I thought I would present a question to you all.

https://strawpoll.com/polls/XOgON8RKon3

The place of Half-Bloods and Exotic (I.e currently non-playable races like Ogres, Arakkoa, Elementals, Dragons, Demons etc), are they fine? Are there caveats? Are they a sign of an uncreative mind? What does Argent Dawn think?

Oh and vote in the poll!

Half-bloods are perfectly fine and with how closely many races have lived with each other in the twenty years since the Third War we might expect a realistic increase in their numbers, many of whom will be reaching adulthood as Dragonflight plays out.

Some “exotic” races like ogres are in my opinion better than others like arakkoa because some ogre tribes are part of the Horde.

Half-bloods/half-breeds are as Alannyse said perfectly fine, as long as there are actual recorded cases of them in the lore. Don’t show up as for example a half-night elf, half-human and expect to be welcomed with open arms until we know it’s something that actually exists.

As for exotic races I’d say go wild to your heart’s content as long as they fit in the context you’re in and you’ve done your reading and aren’t doing it for cool points, but that also sort of applies to all races.

Ogres are less exotic than vulpera and void elves, they were a core race of the old horde. There is also no problem playing a Broken. If they are with Horde or Alliance, go for it.

Other species are best played as NPCs in a plot. I was an elemental in a campaign to let the heroes fight me.

Could you elaborate on this?

If it serves to tell an interesting story, sure, I find the mix of high elf and a human to be one of the more interesting ones since the character is potentially stuck between two very different worlds and cultures.

Miss me with the kind of garbage like a draenei and worgen mix because not only is it stupid but it’s a desperate attempt to flash a neon sign over your head.

Exotic races? Sure, that can work, I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with some decent Ethereal roleplayers over the years but most of the time they’re better off being used as a device in a story event tbqh, I agree with that point. I know a lot of people think different but not everything needs to be a player race, they’d just lose their charm then. (think tuskarr for instance)

There was a rumoured Half-Troll/-Night Elf in one of the comics. But that was never confirmed nor denied by the person in question.

Also Half-Night Elf/Humans have had zero precedents and I will keep on assuming that, like Draenei, up until recently Night Elves were very rare in Stormwind or other Alliance lands.

For exotic races, yea they’re fine! Dryads, Keepers of the Grove, Furbolg could make for interesting characters! And allies!

Personally, I do think half-breeds etc are perfectly fine (if logical), and any exotic races are fine if done right, like no arakkoa in the middle of Stormwind kinda thing.

I interpret Lelior’s mother being called a half-troll as just an insult. Maybe she wasn’t particularly nice to look at (by night elf standards).

Next please make a thread about the following issues:

  1. The horrible misuse of TRP titles.
  2. Worgen RP. Why is it that most worgen RP is either “I’m a wolfman now and I’ll never shift into my human form,” or the equally weird “I’m a secret worgen and if I get angry I turn into the hulk - I mean a werewolf - I mean a worgen, and I like, totally like, lose my freaking mind.”

Think it’s fine as long as the people doing it are aware of and understand which (half)races are frowned upon/treated like dirt/outright red-name kill on sight trash in the lore.

Don’t get mad OOC because some elves aren’t super nice to a half elf, don’t freak out because your vrykul or san’layn isn’t welcome somewhere. That sorta stuff.

Hybrid races are fine as long as they already exist in the lore and are roleplayed with their cultural implications in mind.

Thalassian Elf / Human
Orc / Ogre
Orc / Draenei
are the three that spring to mind.

A High Elf / Human, though overplayed, would be much more welcome in Stormwind than an Orc / Draenei in Orgrimmar, for example, though both are possible as presented in the lore.

Much of the same goes for exotic races in my opinion. If there is a sizeable faction of a race that is otherwise hostile to the Horde or the Alliance, like Stonemaul Ogres and Pearlfin Jinyu respectively, then I don’t see an issue with it.

But like Dekarn said, races that have no lore precedent of being on good terms with one of the factions should just take the L and not “/e dodges u epicly + i’m not like the others” to facilitate their presence when reasonably confronted.

Nah, the Horde needs all the help they can get.

Sure they do, but that does not mean that particular race combo will be looked upon favourably by other Orcs.

I assume that many older orcs would look at a half-orc/draenei and feel a great swell of shame. The most infamous member of that demographic, Garona, wasn’t exactly conceived in honourable or loving circumstances.

With particularly exotic/unusual options I would advise people think what that precise decision gives to their character that another more humble or “mundane” race option did not.
I don’t think choosing these to try and be ahead of a crowd is always wise, as I find the best way to make a character memorable and enjoyable to RP with is work towards layered personalities, and consideration of who they are in terms of their histories and cultures.

If, however, someone is opting for a more unusual option to actually explore being that option as they are presented and responded to in the setting, difficulties and all, then I think that’s reasonable.
There are some situations where it’s, perhaps, too unusual and ill-fitting, such as a notoriously hostile race such as the harpy, say, and they might be better indulged as story-event characters.

In short, they work if they’re being utilised properly, but I would probably urge someone who wants the character to be wholesomely received and suffer no issues or judgement for being an ‘exotic’ sort to possibly reconsider if what they’re aiming for as a character can be done with one of the 20+ playable options.

I’d say RPing a halfbreed or anything more ‘exotic’ like dragons n such is fine as long as one doesn’t go overboard flaunting it off like it’s the hot topic.

Admittedly I do RP a Half Elf (Have done since Legion/Early BfA ish) and a small handful of dragons, it can be pretty fun really!

I remember a few years back when a Belf DK gave my Half Elf a beating because she was wearing Silvermoon colours (A Tabard), was a neat bit of confrontation.
As for WHY she was wearing one? At the time she was a bit of a headstrong and stubborn gal, didn’t really care if someone had issues with it.

Orc / Human might also be a feasible halfbreed, granted not yet seen any I think?

The only reason I wouldn’t consider roleplaying something like an arakkoa is the lack of customisation for them. If they ever become playable (get on that Blizzard), my position would definitely change.

I don’t have any issue with others playing them though, they exist in the setting and are therefore viable to RP in circumstances befitting the race.
