The 10.1.5 patch did a LOT of good things for affliction, namely removing Malefic Affliction from the game. It’s absolutely amazing as it allows affliction to actually be able to burst when you start a fight against a boss. It reduced our set up time by 3 casts, which is really nice.
Now however, I see that Haunt has been hotfixed to no longer apply or refresh shadow’s embrace. Which in effect means Affliction has had additional set up added back to it, just after a lot was rightly removed. WHY ? This makes no sense, Affliction had a ridiculously long set up, you removed some, and now you’re adding back some ?
This makes no sense, please revert it, or better yet, simply remove Shadow’s Embrace and change it to bake it into Unstable Affliction, just like the “Contagion” talent in Legion : The target affected by Unstable Affliction takes 4.5/9% more damage from the warlock.
Noone actually bothers maintaining Shadow’s Embrace on more than 1 target anyways, we have way too many and better things to do. So it wouldn’t be a DPS loss. It would be a nice QOL change though that would complement the removal of Malefic Affliction. It would remove the 2 (NOW 3!) ticks of drain soul we have to channel when opening on a boss to get shadow’s embrace up and running, when really what we want is to start rapturing as soon as possible.
It was already annoying having to channel Drain Soul during the opening to add 2 stacks to shadow’s embrace. Now it’s even longer, since we need to drain for 3 ticks instead of 2. This also creates issues in the rotation, because very often Haunt was a very efficient way to refresh Shadow’s embrace on our main target while dotting other things. Now this option is gone and we have to cast Drain Soul for just 1 tick, so additional GCDs we have to spend when we’re already pretty GCD starved.
This is an issue Affliction already had in Shadowlands, too many things to manage at once, and very early on, Haunt was changed to also contribute to Shadow’s Embrace to help us manage it all. It should remain like that, Affliction still has a big number of things to manage.
This was not a bug, contrary to what the bluepost said, it was an intentional change, it was even less something that needed to be fixed.
