Hey there!
So In the grand scheme of things, I’m relatively new and I’m still trying to get a lot of the basics down. There are a lot of things that I still don’t fully understand. But the main thing I’d like to know is what is a heirloom…? I’ve looked into it and I think I’ve confused myself -
What is it?
Where do I get it?
Can I get them in quests and drops?
Are they rare?
What would the best one be for a levelling warlock?
While the Wowhead guide is an excellent list, you know what it doesn’t tell you? It doesn’t say “If you’re a Warlock, get these …”
This is an old article, but it’s still pretty much right https://psynister.wordpress.com/2011/05/02/guide-to-heirlooms-4-1/
Scroll down to “Cloth Armor Set”
Basically, get any Cloth heirloom with Intellect.
Get any Intellect staff.
Don’t get fussed about the value of Crit vs Haste while levelling; it’s not going to make much difference.
And have a lot of Gold! 500 per piece up to 60, then 2000 per piece up to 90, then 5000 per piece per expansion above that. For a new player, that means buying a selling a WoW Token.
If you have friends that already play the game, ask them if they’d fund your heirlooms. I’ve frequently helped friends that way. Or you can buy a token and sell it for the current gold value. You don’t have to have heirlooms to level but they are a bonus.
Oh, I didn’t notice I had left the last sentence unfinished. I probably was going to say “If you have 20,000 gold to spend, you can get your heirlooms to cover you up to about level 90, but you’ll need something like another 100,000 to be loomed all the way to 110.”
Same vendor sells Ancient, Timeworn and Weathered Heirloom Scabbard (for weapons) and Armor Casing (for armors), to upgrade you heirloom to scale up to lvl 90, 100 and 110 respectively.
When purchased, just open your heirloom tab (it’s in the same window with pets, mounts and appearances, just different tab), click on the scabbar/armor casing in your bag and then on the heirloom you want to upgrade.
Et voila, heirloom is upgraded for all your present and future characters!
Heirlooms scale upto a certain level. Base heirlooms will scale with you till level 60. So for every level your character gains your heirlooms ‘upgrade’ to match that power.
What Kluggar mentioned allows you to extend that level range. So buying a scabbard upgrade, for instance, will allow an heirloom weapon to scale with you upt level 90, 100 and so on.
