Hello, EU!

Reminds me of the time when I had just started working and someone who heard my accent thought they’d score a point off me. Asked me "hey you’re from Scotland right?’

“Yup”

“Do you guys celebrate 4th of July over there?”

“Yeah” I said “We call it Thank God We Got Rid Of Them Day.”

He just gave me a look off “dang it…” and went off without saying a word.

I Spent years getting called “Jock” at school because I came from Newcastle when we moved to the Midlands when I was a kid, because I suppose, to Kids a Geordie accent does sound Scottish, I mean I suppose I -could- have educated them as to why Geordies are called ‘Geordies’ or explained that I was indeed half Scots and half Irish, but born in England, but it was easier to just go with it.

Didn’t stop my Dad getting livid and storming up the road to my school when I got marked down for spelling for writing “Mam” instead of “Mum”

“It’s a bluddy accent man! Yeh cannit tell a bairn off for writing an English word the way they’ve heard it all their born life like, and fer the record, you sound bluddy funny to us an’ all like!”

For a tiny country, the UK has a -lot- of accents going on.

Which I love.

Im from Dundee so my accent is absolute top notch when it comes to confusing other Scottish accents. One time Dundee were playing Hibs, , me. my dad. and my uncle went to Edinburgh. Going down leith walk, my uncle being the complete tool he was, says to a doorman outside a pub “hey dae ye ken if there’s ony pubs near by…?” Now most people would say my uncle was trying to be clever but we both knew that was my uncle just being my uncle but the doorman gave him a raised eyebrow and growled “dae ye ken whaur ye are pal?”. We went to a chipper and me in broad dundonian says “eh’m gie me… a black puddin supper, and a peh.”

Nothing.

“sorry pal whit?”

“Black puddin supper. and a peh.”

Still nothing. Then it dawned on me.

“Black pudding supper and a pie”

“awww AWW!! OK AH GOT YA KNOO BOSSMAN!! yer fae Dundee right?”

“Yep. Eh ah am!”

“hahaha aww sorry bossman ah coodnae understaun ye first time, here ya go”

The Mancunian accent is hard to do without slipping into parody, though it is possible, but yeah, it is a -really- distinctive accent. People often refer to an ‘English Accent’ without realising there is no such thing as an English accent, Someone from the South West would have difficulty understanding someone from the North East, and both would be baffled by a full on Cockney.

Weirdly, my German teacher at school was from Hamburg. I was told years later, when actually -in- Germany, by someone in Munich, that I was clearly from Hamburg because of my Accent. When I said I was actually English it blew their mind…

So yeah, I guess we are totally shaped by how we learn words by hearing and repetition.

I won’t Copypaste it, but I love that story Souldefiler, and yeah, I can completely empathise with it!

“Ehh, its Geet gannin’ it doon pretty canny like!”
“What?”
“Oot there man, hae ye not seen it?”
“Do you mean it is raining rather heavily?”
“Aye, thas what I said man like, haway.”

And the Geordi accent
