i have been levelling up my followers, but unable to win any easy missions and elite missions are not even worth attempting. i know im doing it right by placing all my followers in the right slots… but nothing works… All my missions have been a failure. any tips or guides? this is so frustrating.
Read the followers ability, placement and powers actually matter this time around unlike previous iterations.
Also make sure to fill all slots, you can place troops multiple times, this makes it 10x easier.
I find this the hardest (to understand) incarnation of the mission table and I hate the damned thing but it gives soul ash missions, I’ve failed all of the soul ash mission so far and my third failure will probably come in, within the next half an hour.
I now have a weak aura which is supposed to give me a rough guide of how successful my run will be, I’m not sure if it’s helping. I am hoping that one of addon makers will get one of the mission table managers working for Shadowlands.
Different people like different things, my friend adores it and even watches all his battles play out, I just skip to see if I’ve won or lost. I have no idea why I win or lose. I just keep bashing my head against that brick wall because I need to level my followers. Every time I get a new one it pulls the average down. So I have to get them up asap.
The command table was boring but easy to do in the previous expansion… This expansion they just replaced the easy to do part with complicated mechanisms… and they hide important rewards behind them…
so frustrating

It explains a lot of the problems that people have.
Basically, if you are Kyrian or Venthyr you are out of luck since those covenants are plain “bad” because they lack healing companions.
Also, troops are based around the average level of your companions. So if you have any low level companion your troops will be lower as your other companions aswell.
What covenant do you play Puny ? They are various strats depending on the followers your covenant has access to.
There is no strategy other than fill the field, big hp up front rangers in the back.
Kyrian and venthyr have the worst followers. They royally messed up the tuning.
Just imagine the mission levels are wrong, just add 5-6 imaginary levels to the mission to get the actual lvl your followers will have a shot at winning.
This table is a joke and half-assed and anybody who says otherwise is either necrolord night fae or straight up lying.
Just checking you’ve spotted that you can drag troops repeatedly, and that you’re not trying to win with just 3 units
Failing that; be aware that enemies attack down and left if they can, so make sure you have tanky units on the front left and middle. Watch what your guys are going to attack in priority and if the enemy has a healer, try to focus them down.
It is deterministic however. Whether you win or lose depends only on 2 things:
- Your setup; unit choice and placement. Sometimes you need 2 tanks, sometimes you need a tank at the back, sometimes you need to pack maximum DPR. It all depends on what the enemy units are doing.
- Whether this mission is at all possible for you. Sometimes they just aren’t. I keep seeing one which I mathematically cannot win.
Things you know:
- Enemies attack down and left; your front left slot gets most most of the time.
- The displayed attack power is auto attack; this happens every round regardless of special abilities. Drag units individually to see their specific auto attack.
- Special abilities are very different and you have to read them to know what they do.
From this you can calculate which of your units dies first, what that then reduces your DPR to, and whether you can beat the overall encounter.
But it is quite a lot of thought, and some of it is badly overtuned. To get through level 12 rare missions, I consistently need to field a team that is 15+.
Also I’m pretty sure covenant troops and companions were never balanced. Some have an easier time than others Venthyr suffer from a lack of early tanks, Kyrian don’t seem to have any healers at all. It is frustratingly unpolished and smells like a feature nobody tested.
TLDR wait for blizz to fix the situation or add on to fix it for them.
no they don’t?
I literally just got a healing Venthyr from Torghast
Seriously, no, just no…
I quote the description of the Kyrian Phalanx tank troop:
“Shield of Tomorrow
The Phalanx takes 10% reduced damage and protect all range allies in the same way”
Putting them in the back is not going to change a thing in terms of protecting none-tank troops/companions.
Oh, then it is just Kyrians…
And that makes it even worse then I thought.
Yup.
For some reason Blizzard decided Kyrian don’t need a healer.
im kyrian… so i dont have a chance?
Phalanx has over twice the hitpoints of a halberdier.
If you’re running with just 1-2 companions, then taking a second tank can buy you an extra 6-7 rounds for that companion to keep doing their job. They are the heavy hitters and the ones you should be trying to keep alive until the end of the fight. Multiple tanks means that when one dies, the enemy still has to chew through another before it gets to your DPR units.
That is my experience anyway. I’ve had a couple of elite/rare missions that mathed out as failures with 1 tank and successes with 2, because if the enemy started hitting Pelagos or a Halberdier, they’d die very quickly.
Yes you do, but it may (or may not) be harder for you than other covenants. You’re going to have to understand how the table works, read the enemy abilities, and plan your party accordingly.
So far, I’ve found I have to over-level the rare missions by 3-4 to get anywhere. Which is annoying, but not a total blocker.
Well, let me put it this way: a level 12 elite mob wiped my team with average level 14, badly.
So you will most likely need 6 or so levels higher then the elite mob in question.
i recently changed from necro to kyrian. While i was in necro i used to win atleast some of the missions… while in kyrian 0 so far.
and another thing i got a follower in torghast when i was with necro… after the covenent swap you dont get him or his counterpart version for kyrian.
so guess you need to find your kyrian one again in torghast… seems a bit too much for a command table imho
Guess what: thats what I do and that did not work on 1 mission; 3 times my team got absolutely destroyed, this eventhough the average level went up by 2 each try…
It doenst work for me… i tried 5-6 times but it always fails
