There is an addon, Narcissus, that lets you take screenshots set at the max quality automatically. It provides other screenshot features that might interest you as well.
It also depends on if you are then pasting that screenshot into other software what those settings are. For instance if I paste a screenshot into a Corel PaintshopPro the colours for a new document are defaulted to RGB 8 bit. Up that to RGB 16 bit before pasting and you get a far greater colour depth. The data is there when you take the shot but the quality will be affected by whatever DPI or colour settings are in what you then go on to use it with.
Sorry, as an edit, I’m pretty sure the quality of the initial capture comes down to your monitor. More accurately it could be described as a “display capture” as in it captures what is shown on your display.
It’s definitely worth doing then comparing but my point above was that if you then use that image in something the quality will be affected by whatever the settings are. Think of it like filming something in HD but then showing it to someone on an old TV. The quality was there when you made it but then reduced when you showed it due to what it was being shown on. In an ideal world I’d personally save all screen captures as a .pict file or something but the file size would be too big for posting in most places. With a jpeg, the image is compressed so it’s a smaller file but also of lesser quality. It really depends on how you want to use them once they’ve been taken.
You wouldn’t need a 4k monitor to take a 4k screenshot?
The game could render a 4k frame and then downscale it to a lower resolution, downscaling works better then upscaling in this regard.
WoW provides a resolution scale but i can’t say if the image made from a screenshot reflects 4k or the downscaled version as i’m unable to login at this moment because the servers are having a stroke again.
I’ll try to link my pc to the TV that supports 4k and I’ll try the combination. By the way I would like to use them personally, maybe for some art prints and stuff. I don’t have in mind posting them somewhere.
That’s what I meant by it depending on what you wanted to do with them. For prints you want the highest res and filesize possible whereas it’s not that necessary if just using them as a pc background or posting online etc. You’re very welcome, hopefully you can find out what the best results are.
